Pete Wentz: Gay for Media Play

Is Pete Wentz falling out of the closet?

The eyeliner-friendly rocker and Ashlee Simpson spouse serves as cover boy for the latest issue of Out magazine, which boasts a lengthy feature on the Fall Out Boy bassist, illustrated with a topless pic.

The primary, uh, thrust is that a lot of people think Pete is gay, and that can be burdensome at times. Wentz’s solution? Outing himself as queer, even if he’s straight. Probably.

“Our culture bombards us with this idea that you’re not [gay], and if you are that, there’s something wrong with you, and then we’re going to call you that, and then it’s an insult,”  Wentz semi-explains. “There is a sense of self-empowerment or recapturing who you are by people calling you ‘fag,’ and being like, ‘Yeah, I am a fag.’ Even though you’re not. What does somebody respond? That dude has nothing to say about that again.”

Wentz says his sexually murky persona has been an inspiration: “Being ambiguously flamboyant really does help. I’ve had so many people come up and be like, ‘I felt okay to come out of the closet after you said this.’ “

Wow, the altruism is strong with this dude.

Either that, or he’s savvy enough to know that playing coy about his preferences will land his face on yet another magazine cover.

Although, if Pete really is less than 100 percent straight, it might explain a few things.
