A Tribute to Estelle Getty
Lifetime honored the late Estelle Getty with a special Golden Girls marathon on Friday.
Getty played the sharp-witted Sophia Petrillo during the sitcom's seven year stint. She was nominated for seven Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards, winning one of each.
The talented actress got her start in Yiddish theater, and is well-known for her portrayol of Harvey Fierstein's mother in the Broadway play Torch Song Trilogy. She also wrote an autobiography titled If I Knew Then, What I Know Now... So What?
The Golden Girls aired from 1985 to 1992, and centered around the life of four elderly women sharing a home. Each of her Golden Girls co-stars had something special to say about Getty.
Rue McClanahan: "Don't feel sad about her passing. She will always be with us in her crowning achievement, Sophia."
Bea Arthur: "Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her."
Betty White: "The only comfort at this moment is that although Estelle has moved on, Sophia will always be with us."
Getty had been battling advanced dementia for many years after her retirement from acting. She limited her public appearances in the time leading up to her death. She passed away early Tuesday morning at her home in Hollywood.
