Morning Buzz: California Wildfires Rage On, Snoop Dogg Flees
TMZ reports that Snoop Dogg was among the celebrities and civilians forced to flee the wildfires raging across Southern California, which so far have destroyed over 700 homes and scorched over 35,000 acres of land in different counties of SoCal and are still going strong. Snoop and his family and entourage fled his Diamond Bar ranch home and dispatched personnel to retrieve possessions and memorabilia from the house. CNN reports that the Montecito fire, which threatened the homes of such celebrities as Oprah Winfrey, Rob Lowe, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Costner has “suspicious origins.” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared states of emergency for the affected counties since the blaze damaged or destroyed several hundred homes and closed major freeways.
The New York Daily News reports that comedienne Wanda Sykes came out as a lesbian at a rally against California’s Proposition 8 in Las Vegas over the weekend. Proposition 8, voted into law in California during the election, overturns the legalization of same-sex marriage. “Now, I gotta get in their face,” she said to the assembled protestors. “I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”
Page Six reports that Prince, a Jehovah’s Witness, has been spotted going door to door in Los Angeles neighborhoods to knock on doors and proselytize. The rock star joined the religion two years ago. “Sometimes people act surprised, but mostly they’re totally cool about it,” he tells The New Yorker. His Royal Badness says that he sees his conversion as “a realization. It’s like Morpheus and Neo in The Matrix.”
TMZ reports that Michael Jackson, who recently sold his famed Neverland Valley Ranch, is being sued by Sheik Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who is the son of the king of Bahrain. Jackson fled to Bahrain after his molestation trial in 2003, and allegedly told the Sheik that he would make an album for his record label. Khalifa is now seeking $7 million in damages from the troubled pop star.
People reports that Travis Barker is once again in the recording studio, while still recuperating from serious burns he sustained in a horrific plane crash in September which left four dead. “I’m already playing my drums again and I’m already back in the studio,”he said via satellite at the TRL finale. “It was like riding a bike. It was really exciting to know I still have my chops. It still felt good. I still can make it around the kit. Everything felt right, so I’m thankful to be able to play.”
