Katy Perry Rides a Giant Jingle Ball Banana
Los Angeles radio station 102.7 KIIS FM held their annual “Jingle Ball” on Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
Pop stars such as Jesse McCartney, Estelle, Katy Perry, Akon, Chris Brown and the Pussycat Dolls were led by KIIS DJ and television’s golden boy Ryan Seacrest, 34, in wowing the crowd.
Plaster-casted Katy Perry, 24, wearing a vampish Mrs. Claus outfit that was definitely not Christmas dinner friendly, rode in on a giant, bejeweled banana (?) to strains of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”
When the smoke and banana peels cleared, Katy screamed out her hit “I Kissed a Girl” to berserk pop fans.
It’s not known what holiday tradition the banana refers to, but it was definitely arty—and suggestive.
“Girls just wanna have fun and peel bananas!” Perry exclaimed, causing moms in the audience to pull out the earmuffs for their kids.
Most of the performers were restricted to 15-minute sets to allow onstage time for all the celebrities in the venue.
Akon, 34, dove into the crowd to dance with the audience, and proved to be the night’s biggest crowd-pleaser with his energetic performance, according to the Orange County Register.
But the night’s biggest surprise came when Rihanna, 20, strolled out of nowhere to duet on her smash-hit “Umbrella” with boyfriend Chris Brown, 19. Superstar Rihanna—she of the seven hit singles—wasn’t even listed on the bill, so the audience was floored.
If pop idols are your thing, this was your Christmas!
