Barack Obama Says Final Farewell to his Grandmother
Today President-elect Barack Obama, 46, his wife Michelle, 44, and several family members scattered the ashes of Barack’s maternal grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, at a Honolulu, Hawaii, ocean overlook known as Lanai Lookout.
Dunham, with her husband Stanley, helped raise Barack in Honolulu from the time he was 10 until he graduated from high school in 1979. Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, worked in Indonesia most of that time.
Madelyn Dunham died of cancer at age 86 two days before her grandson was elected the 44th President of the United States in early November.
Prior to the scattering of Madelyn’s ashes, the Obamas attended an hourlong memorial service for Dunham at the First Unitarian Church in Honolulu, reports the Chicago Tribune.
Barack is currently on a 13-day vacation with his family. The Internet was whipped into a frenzy on Monday when photographs surfaced of the president-elect walking shirtless outside the estate he is currently staying in while visiting Hawaii.
President Obama will take office in the White House on January 20, 2009.
