Morning Buzz: Tom Cruise on Jett Travolta’s Death
Tom Cruise, a friend and fellow Scientologist to John Travolta and Kelly Preston, opens up about the recent death of their son Jett on today’s episode of The View. “I just don’t have the words for it,” Cruise said. “It’s just horrific. Here you have a man, both of them doting parents, they’re wonderful people and…” People reports that Cruise also refuted claims that Scientology prevents its practitioners from seeking proper medical attention. “That’s just not true,” he said. “They say, ‘Get your physical, get your medication, get your physical illnesses handled.'”
The memorial service for Jett Travolta was held at his family’s Ocala, Florida estate yesterday afternoon. E! reports that mourners included Sopranos star James Gandolfini, Garth Brooks and wife Trisha Yearwood, Kirstie Alley, and Lisa Marie Presley. The service was held by a female Scientologist minister, and under a tent on the estate’s lawn. Travolta and family reportedly entered when the rest of the guests were seated, and kissed a large photograph of Jett that was set up behind the podium after the service.
Heath Ledger was named Best Supporting Actor at the 14th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards yesterday. E! reports that The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan spoke about the deceased actor’s work. “Anyone who’s seen any of the extraordinary work that Heath did knows that I can’t presume to speak for him in any way, because his voice was as unique as it was original. But…I know that I speak for all of us when I say that working with him was one of the greatest experiences any of us ever had or probably ever will have.”
Kevin Costner was taken to the hospital on Tuesday morning after phoning 911 from his car. TMZ reports that Costner, on his way to a business meeting in Hollywood, pulled over after feeling light-headed and then began vomiting. Costner was taken to Cedar-Sinai and kept overnight for tests, but released the next day.
Ugly Betty actress Ana Ortiz is pregnant with her first child, according to People. Ortiz, who is married to musician Noah Lebenzon, is expecting at the end of July. “They are thrilled and ecstatic,” a friend said. “They can’t wait to be parents.”
