The night’s winners included Hathaway for Best Actress for her dramatic turn in Rachel Getting Married, Clint Eastwood as Best Actor for Gran Torino, Penelope Cruz for Supporting Actress in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Josh Brolin as Supporting Actor for his role in Milk.
But the most enthusiasm in the room came for low-budget British flick Slumdog Millionaire. The Los Angeles Times reports that everyone from event host Whoopi Goldberg to presenters Jonathan Demme, Julian Schnabel and Meredith Vieira and actors such as Brolin heaped praise upon the film at various points throughout the evening.
“I’d like to thank the room for the generosity you’ve shown the film tonight and that you’ve shown me,” director Danny Boyle said when Slumdog picked up the Best Film honor.
