UPDATE: Today Rodriguex admitted to ESPN's Peter Gammons, "I did take a banned substance. For that, I'm very sorry and deeply regretful."

"When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure," Rodriguez—who says that he partook in steroids of his own free will—confesses in the interview. "I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day...Back then, [baseball] was a different culture. It was very loose. I was young, I was stupid, I was naïve. Madonna's former pal Alex Rodriguez is in a heap of trouble.

According to a report in the respected sport journal Sports Illustrated, the baseball player tested positive for steroids in 2003.

SI cites four independent sources as the basis of the dynamite claim which will rock the baseball world in the way that Like a Virgin rocked the music charts. Rodriguez's name is reported to appear on a list of 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in the Major League.

Baseball's '03 survey testing. At the time the star played for the Texas Rangers. He is currently a Yankee who made major celebrity news after stepping out with Madonna last summer following her split with Guy Ritchie.

When approached by an SI reporter on Thursday at a gym in Miami, Rodriguez declined to discuss his 2003 test results. "You'll have to talk to the union," he said.

When asked if there was an explanation for his positive test, he said, "I'm not saying anything."
