VIDEO: Salma Hayek Breast-Feeds Another Woman’s Baby
Forget Sally Struthers’ “Feed the Children” Campaign; Salma Hayek is taking the direct approach to nourishing the world’s underfed youth.
The 42-year-old actress—who gave birth to a daughter, Valentina Paloma, in November 2007—was on a charity mission at a hospital in Sierra Leone last week when she encountered an impoverished woman who’s incapable of feeding her baby boy. Wasting no time, Salma sprang into action and took matters into her own hands. With a camera crew from ABC’s Nightline rolling film, Hayek brought the hungry child to her breast and began nursing him.
“The baby was perfectly healthy, but the mother did not have any milk,” Hayek noted later. “He was very hungry—I was weaning my daughter Valentina, but I still had a lot of milk, so I breast-fed the baby.” The From Dusk Till Dawn beauty added. “It was amazing because he’s really looking at me and he’s very little. My baby is one year so she can suck a lot harder.”
Hayek did, however, admit to conflicted feelings about her charitable act: “I thought about it; am I being disloyal to my child by giving my milk away? I actually think my baby would be very proud to be able to share her milk and when she grows up I will make sure she continues to share and be generous caring person.”
Way to work toward a better future, Salma. Check out the video of Hayek breast-feeding the infant below:
The topic of breast-feeding obviously weighs heavily on Hayek’s mind; in November, the 30 Rock guest star admitted that she’s addicted to nursing her daughter Valentina. “I’m like an alcoholic,” Hayek said. “It is like, I don’t care if I cry, I don’t care if I am fat, I am just going to do it for one more week, one more month, and then I see how much good it is doing her and I can’t stop.”
