Mickey Rourke Channels Imelda Marcos
International fashion plate Mickey Rourke once again wowed the fashion-minded public yesterday, rocking a pair of shiny gold sneakers as he chilled with pals on the streets of Greenwich Village, New York.
And apparently, there's a lot more flashy footwear where that came from.
British paper the Sunday Mirror reports that Rourke caused a commotion at London's Heathrow Airport over the weekend, thanks to a suitcase filled with 70 pounds' worth of shoes.
The 56-year-old Wrestler actor—who was returning from the BATFTA Awards—was seemingly unaware that his staggering shoe collection was eight pounds over the maximum weight limit for luggage, and was forced to re-pack in order to comply with regulations.
"It was really weird and extraordinary to watch. Five-and-a-half stone—36kg—of shoes is one heck of a lot of shoes, especially for a man," an airline source told the paper. "'It's the sort of thing you would expect from Victoria Beckham, but not of a tough guy like Mickey Rourke."
Oddly, even with the extravagant collection of footwear, Rourke's own feet were woefully unprotected against the London climate.
"It was freezing cold but he had no socks on and a pair of blue slip-ons with very low heels," the source notes. "And it turned out that he had about 40 pairs of shoes very similar to the ones he was wearing in the case."
Of course, nobody knows better than Mickey Rourke that sometimes you have to sacrifice comfort for style. After all, he's learned from the very best on that front.
