Sean Penn Trumps “Brother” Rourke For Best Actor
Sean Penn ended Mickey Rourke’s Cinderella-in-wrestling-tights story by taking the Oscar for Best Actor.
Even Penn seemed surprised with the win for his role as gay political activist Harvey Milk in Milk. He jokingly called the people who voted for him “commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns.”
But Penn managed to scribble down some thoughts on a crumpled piece of paper. He retrieved it from his jacket pocket and read them off as a tearful Robin Wright Penn looked on from the front row.
Despite some seemingly tense moments leading up to the Oscars, Penn took pains to point out and praise his fellow nominee Rourke. “Mickey Rourke rises again, and he is my brother.”
In the backstage pressroom, Penn snagged a congratulatory kiss from Kate Winslet and then took questions from the press. When asked about Mickey Rourke he talked about his “close friendship” to the actor.
In reference to the anti-gay protesters outside the theater Penn said: “I’d tell them to turn in the hate card and find their better self.”
