Kim Kardashian Apologizes for Monkey Business
Kim Kardashian says she's sorry if she came across as insensitive with her chimp pics, and she's totally not monkeying around.
The 28-year-old Keeping Up With the Kardashians star released photos of her temporary cast-mate, Suzy the chimpanzee, last week.
As entertaining as any monkey sighting usually is, the timing of the release was less than ideal. Just days earlier, a 15-year-old show-biz chimp named Travis had gone on a rampage in Hartford, Connecticut, and ripped off the face off of his owner. Travis was shot dead by police shortly thereafter.
In light of these events, Kardashian's seeming advocacy of keeping domesticated chimps as pets came off to some—particularly animal experts—as irresponsible and insensitive.
But now Kardashian has taken to her official Web site to clear the air.
"I understand my timing was not appropriate and it was insensitive of me, so I want to explain," Kardashian writes.
"The pictures I posted are from six months ago when we were filming season three of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I had held onto these pictures for months and preset them to run the month before my show was going to air, to give you guys exclusive glimpses into season three."
Kardashian goes on to explain that she and her sisters—Khloe and Kourtney—had rented Suzy for a week to play a prank on their mother, Kris, who had been pestering them to settle down and have children.
When news of the Travis attack reached the Kardashian camp, Kim realized that this was one joke without a funny punchline.
"What happened to the woman that was attacked by the chimpanzee was devastating! My mom and I saw it on the news and heard the 911 calls and we both cried!" Kardashian says. "Our family is praying for everyone involved in that traumatizing attack. In no way did I mean to insult or offend anyone by posting these pictures."
