‘High School Musical 4′ In the Works

Here’s the good news: A fourth installment of the High School Musical movie series has been green-lit by Disney.

Now the not-so-great news: Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens may not be in it.

Broadcasting & Cable reports that a new installment of the wildly successful series will premiere on the Disney Channel in 2010. However, the straight-to-TV movie will feature a new cast of characters—meaning that Zac and Vanessa’s roles would be marginal, if they appear at all.

“The High School Musical trilogy introduced a new generation to the celebrated genre of movie musicals,” says Gary Marsh, president, Entertainment, Disney Channels Worldwide. “In crafting this next iteration, we’ve challenged the entire creative team to raise the bar again—and create something truly worthy of this extraordinary global phenomenon.”

Production on the new movie will begin later this year. The  screenplay will be written by Peter Barsocchini, who penned the scripts for the first three HSM movies.
