Hank Baskett Talks: Proposing to Kendra Wilkinson

Hank Baskett spent weeks trying to find the perfect engagement ring for girlfriend Kendra Wilkinson. As he geared up for the moment to present it to her, the thing he feared most was “boo-boo face.”

Boo-boo face? The Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver explains the phrase and talks about getting down on one knee for the surprise proposal at Seattle’s Space Needle exclusively to Celebuzz.

“One of my teammates told me, ‘Man whatever you do, just pray that she doesn’t give you the boo-boo face,'” Baskett tells Celebuzz of the nerve-wracking proposal moment. “Because that’s bad.”

With that in mind, Baskett kept focused on the Eagles’ season and a November game against the Seattle Seahawks that both the Baskett and Wilkinson families were due to attend. He took his preciously guarded engagement ring, because this was an opportunity to show it privately to Kendra’s family. “I had no intention of proposing,” he says. “I just wanted to show them.”

In Seattle, both sets of family decided to sight-see and check out the famous Space Needle. “I knew (Kendra) was tired from the trip, so I was telling her that we could just stay at the hotel and sleep.”

“But she was like, ‘Nah, that’s alright; we can go with them,” Baskett recalls. “And she jokingly said, ‘And you might as well propose to me at the top.'”

A shocked Baskett was called into proposal action. “When she said that I was like, ‘You know what, I’m going to do it. Because of all days, she does not think I am going to propose [on that day].”

He even had a jeweled ladybug ring-holder with him that Kendra had admired at a shop and which Hank had secretly circled back to purchase.

On a cold, rainy day in November, the families checked out Seattle’s Space Needle. “I was just nervous as hell as we were walking around,” says Hank.

Finally the group decided to take group pictures on an outdoor observation deck. The scene of her family along with his parents inspired him. “I said, ‘You know, if we’re going to make family pictures, we might as well make it a true family.'”

“I got down on one knee and started proposing,” says Baskett. The athlete who has made his name in the clutch even got nervous. “I will tell every guy out there that it is not as easy as you would think it is.”

“I had practiced this talk on my own. But when that happened…Ah, jeez. I mumbled everything and basically just said, ‘Will you marry me?'”

Even in the cold, windy weather on the observatory deck, Baskett recalls, “I was sweating. I was so nervous. Sweating, even though it was cold outside.”

“And while I was down there, she was so caught off-guard and shocked. She didn’t say anything. I felt like I was down there for hours. I was like, ‘Please say something. Even if it’s no.’ Because she was just looking at me.”

“She finally said yes.”

The moment broke the tension and sparked joy among the family. One stranger in the crowd started to sing about true love. But Kendra didn’t allow herself to really emote until later.

“She didn’t want to cry in front of anyone,” says Baskett. “But later on when we were walking, she pulled me away from everyone. That’s when she started crying.”
