Leighton Meester to Get 'Beastly'?
Leighton Meester is keeping herself busy lately.
In addition to moonlighting in the recording studio in preparation for the release of her debut album, the Gossip Girl beauty may be signing on for CBS Films' upcoming Beauty and the Beast retelling Beastly.
E! Online reports that Meester, 22, is currently the top choice to fill the female lead in the film, based on Alex Finn's young-adult supernatural novel of the same name. The movie is written and will be directed by Daniel Barnes, whose only prior project is the Sunset Film Festival hit Phoebe in Wonderland.
"Leighton really wants to do it," a source reveals. "They're trying to figure out how to do the two movies (Meester also recently signed on to star in cinematic thriller The Roommate) before she starts shooting another season of Gossip Girl."
Beastly chronicles the tale of a 17-year-old boy who's transformed into a monster by a classmate. High School Musical hunk Zac Efron was rumored to be up for the male lead in the film at one point.
It's probably just as well that he didn't get the part; it's hard to imagine Efron convincingly playing a disfigured beast.
