Jade Goody Laid to Rest
Reality TV star Jade Goody, who succumbed to cervical cancer late last month, was laid to rest on Saturday after a funeral procession that drew thousands of spectators into the street.
Goody’s body wended through the Bermondsey area of London—her hometown—en route to its final resting place in a white Rolls Royce hearse that was covered with flowers, the New York Daily News reports.
Members of the public lined the streets and wept as they paid their respects. Giant screens outside St. John the Baptist Church broadcast the memorial service for the crowds of mourners who could not fit inside the church.
According to the Daily Mirror, Goody’s widower, Jack Tweed, read a poem in honor of his late wife at the service.
“If only I could lie again in the warmth of your embrace/To feel your tender kisses and breath upon my face,” the poem partially read.
Davina McCall—the host of Big Brother, the reality show that initially put Goody in the spotlight—also attended the service. The congregation left the church to the strains of the Beatles’ “Let it Be,” followed by “You Raise Me Up,” which had been one of Goody’s favorite songs.
Goody, who died in her sleep on March 22 at the age of 27, was buried in Epping Forest Burial Park in North Weald, England.
