Madonna to Officially Make Appeal for Mercy
As predicted, Madonna is not done fighting in her efforts to adopt for-year-old Malawian orphan Mercy James.
Reuters reports that Malawi's Supreme Court of Appeal will hear Madonna out on the matter early next month. "I cannot disclose our grounds of appeal but I can confirm that the court will hear our appeal on the 4th of May," says the singer's lawyer, Alan Chinula.
Madonna was shot down earlier this month by the Malawi High Court, which ruled that the 50-year-old songstress didn't meet the residency requirements for adopting a Malawian child. However, in a possible attempt to bring herself up to code on the matter, the Material Mom is now planning to build a family home adjacent to a girls' school that she is also constructing in the Malawian village of Chinkhota.
The singer is not expected to appear at the appeal hearing, though she made her intentions clear in an e-mail to Malawi's Nation newspaper last week. "I want to provide Mercy with a home, a loving family environment and the best education and healthcare possible," she wrote. "And it's my hope that she, like David, will one day return to Malawi and help the people of their country."
