Miss California: Product of a Half-Gay Marriage?
The secret to Miss California Carrie Prejean's opposition to gay marriage may have been revealed.
TMZ reports that Prejean's parents launched lengthy, and exceedingly ugly, divorce proceedings, in 1998, and accusations of homosexuality played a prominent part.
In one of the divorce documents, Prejean's father described an argument he had with Carrie's mother in the parking lot of a restaurant, during which "Ms. Prejean accused me, in front of our daughter, of homosexuality." The divorce papers also quote a court-appointed doctor saying, "The mother questioned [within hearing of Prejean and her sister] whether [Mr. Prejean] was a homosexual or had a homosexual roommate."
A handwritten note from Carrie Prejean's sister, meanwhile, provides a graphic retelling of a weekend visit to their father's apartment: "One time my sister & I went in the hallway of my dad's apartment, & his roommate's door was open all the way & we saw [the roommate] in bed with another man. I don't think it's right for my sister & I to have to live that way."
But, to be fair, Prejean's mother noted that accusations of gayness were a two-way street.
According to a 2000 report from a court-appointed counselor, "The mother also alleges the father told the girls their stepfather was gay, that all men with mustaches are gay." However, Mr. Prejean recalled differently, according to the report: "The father acknowledges talking with the girls about the stepfather's brother being gay, not the stepfather."
No wonder Prejean can't seem to get her head straight about the same-sex marriage.
