Kelly Osbourne's Drug Habit: 50 Vicodin Pills a Day
Kelly Osbourne is opening up about her struggles with drug addiction, and to hear her tell it she had a heavy habit indeed.
The reality-TV personality—who's a veteran of several rehab stints—tells the Houston Chronicle that her prescription-pill habit was sparked by her mother Sharon Osbourne's diagnosis of colon cancer in 2002, and grew worse after her father, Ozzy Osbourne, was involved in a near-fatal quad-bike-accident the following year.
"I was trying to be strong, so I took Vicodin to hide the terrible sadness. I was waking up and emptying six Vicodin into my hand," Osbourne reveals. "Soon I was taking 50 pills a day. Most people would overdose on 10."
The 24-year-old's escalating habit eventually led to a stay in the psychiatric ward at the UCLA Medical Center.
"I was so frightened, it was full of crazy people," Osbourne recalls. "As I curled up in a ball the air was filled with ear-piercing screams. I didn't leave my room for five days. It's one of the scariest things I have ever done."
The harrowing experience didn't deter her from relapsing once again after the failure of her family's variety show, The Osbournes Reloaded.
"I wasn't prepared for the speed of my downward spiral," says Osbourne. "Within a month I wasn't showering or brushing my teeth and my only relationship was with the pizza delivery man. The fact I didn't die is a miracle."
Osbourne—who's engaged to male model Luke Worrall and will be competing in the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars—has been clean since a January 2009 stay at an Oregon rehab facility, but admits that sobriety is a daily struggle.
"I'm realistic. For the first time, I've learned my biggest lesson: there's strong chance I will relapse," says Osbourne. "But because I recognize that, I feel like I've got the strength to fight it."
