New Moon Makes History Despite Bad Reviews
Well, it’s official—last night’s midnight screenings of New Moon raked in $26.27M and beat the record held by the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for most advance sales of any film ever!
Fans may be loving the on-screen chemistry between Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart (or Taylor Lautner, if thats your thing), but critics are not so keen on the Vampire flick.
Roger Ebert claims that the film’s characters “charisma is by Madame Tussaud.”
The Boston Globe remarks “Sorry, girls: The thrill is gone,” adding that “where the first film’s director, Catherine Hardwicke, plugged into [author Stephenie] Meyer’s vision of supernatural teenage lust with abandon, Chris Weitz is stuck with a sequel that’s a morning-after mope-fest.”
And Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times says Lautner and Kristen Stewart lack any sort of chemistry. “The connection between these two is so self-evidently non-romantic that it turns out not to be much of a diversion.”
The movie is expected to make $100 million over the weekend.
Have you seen New Moon yet? Do you agree with the critics?

I personally don’t care what the critics say! Im a twihard! And even though it got bad reviews i still went and saw it! And i liked it! Yeah.it coud have been better but it didnt suck!
I saw the movie last night, and I would have to disagree with the critics who say there is no connection between Kristen and Taylor. The scenes where those 2 were involved were wayy better than I expected. But, that’s just my opinion :) and if you’re a fan of the books – this movie is for you!
Taylor and Kristen make a GREAT couple.. seriously.. I saw the movie at 12 :01 am and I was seriously freak out.. and they both did a GREAT job. And the director… gosh.. I don’t like him at all.. he doesn’t put music for jacob and bella! I mean… the couple.. you know?
for example: Edward and Bella have like a music who represent them.. but jacob and bella don’t have any… =(
I love Twilight and everything, but Harry Potter & the Deatlhy Hallows is soooo gonna take over again! wooooo, long live Harry!…& Edward, of course
Chris made a better work with this movie and IT IS better than the first one, I can definitely agree on that, so people who didn’t like it were just expecting too much of it !
That movie was amazing!! Taylor and Kristen and amazing chemistry, and so did rob and kristen… it was everything i expected and wanted it to be!! i wasnt disappointed at all!!! GO SEE NEW MOON!
being a huge twilight fan ive been waiting for this movie for soooo long and it wasnt exactly the best but it was still good! way better than twilight but like there was to much jacob(sorry) but srsly i wanted edward and bella more! but ya it was good even though,, AND I LOVED IT!!! GAHHH AMAZING I WATCHED IT TWICE ALREADY lol
ive already seen new moon
and i think its totally awesome!!
wayyyyyyyy worse than i expected. i’m not gonna lie.
“Makes history!?!” Exaggerate much? This record will be broken just like this crappy movie broke the records set by the brilliant films: Half Blood Prince and The Dark Knight. Records are made to be broken. But I’m seriously disappointed in what 12 year old American girls choose to spend their money on.
Excuse me I am one of those 12 year old girls i think twilight is one of the best things ever it broke harry potters record cause harry potter sucks!!!
“Makes history!?!” Exaggerate much? This record will be broken just like this crappy movie broke the records set by the brilliant films: Half Blood Prince and The Dark Knight. i agree it makes me mad to thing that greatness is being over taken by movie that are whatever!! i dont know this generation and feel sorry for it they dont have the great music, movies, and other things of our time god bless the 80s, 90s and so on down the list!!
I’m sorry but all movie critics are stupid. They always give crappy reviews to the most poplular movies and good ones to moves that really suck. I never listen to them.
Listen to the true fans. The movie is great and it has made millions and will continue to. Know why? The fans love it! I will see it again and again and I look forward to the next one. They did a great job this time and it shows.
Maybe the critics shouldnt have to read the book to understand, but they cant get upset with the way the movie is, since it is based on a book. I hated Twilight. It was cheesy and Kristen was horrible. But I loved New Moon!! Kristen didnt studder or blink nearly as much, and the seemed more at ease. I feel like there was more humor which help off set the sadness of the movie. I have to admit that I LOVE all the book and New Moon is my least favorite. I have very low expectations for the movie because of how Twilight was butchered on screen. But I was very very happy with the movie!! I will definetly see it again.
* For me the movie was not what I expected, to me it felt rushed, and I think if you have not read the books you should not go see this movie– this movie was made for only the true fans like me, who actually read all the books!! If you have not you might be a little confused about some parts– but luckily for me I read them!! Over all the movie was great, Taylor looked hot as usual!! LOVE TAYLOR– and ONLY HIM!!* =P
critics arnt there to disect and give there opions on the BOOKS. thats why they are called MOVIE critics. they watch the movies and give an honest opionion on the way it was filmed and the actors in them. i think they know what they are talking about. As most of these critics know what makes a good movie and what dosent. They know whats going to generate oscar buzz and what isnt. so lay off, if your a fan of the book, you most likely will be wishing that the movies are amazing and that everyone will be inlove with the books, movies and characters as much as you are. but the truth is, that it takes alot to portray a character from a book into a film well and it takes alot to transfer everything described in a book onto a movie screen and in this case, neither have been done well. if your a massive fan of the books you will most likely see past all the flaws because your just happy to have a face to the characters and so on. but if you honestly dont know what makes a fantastic film then your going to disagree with the critics. also you most likely will aswell if you are a tween and have nothing better to do with your time then pine over a fictional character made up by a woman, and the guy who plays him who in fact is nothing like the character or even particularly likes him.
give it another few years and watch the fan fair die down as they did for LOTR as something new catches the tween markets eye.
:)
I loved new moon, It sticked to the book. Normally parts II are not as good as the Ist part. But this second part was much much better the twilight.
I saw this movie yesturday. In a whhole, I thought it was pretty good, the fight scenes were wicked but it was too slow in some places. Not to mention, rumor has it that Edwards had to paint his abs on because he didn’t work out for the movie. That ruined it for me, whether or nt it was true. The books are waaaaaaay better tho, and always wil be.
I don’t know why, but i can’t stand Kristen’s face. She always seems to have this dead paned look on her face, in my opinion. Also, in every movie I’ve seen her in, she always seems to have the same personality.
Pure garbage. If you have the mentality of a 12 year old girl, you might like this self-indulgent nonsense, otherwise, avoid.
Obviously the critics have not read the books. The second book is a sob fest and is sad and is depressing. Of course the movie is going to be the same way. Also, there is not suppose to be this huge love connection between Jacob (Taylor) and Bella (Kristen). Their relationship is just starting. Book 3 (and Movie 3) is where it gets COMPLICATED. Don’t write a review, if you don’t know your sh*t. Like what was said above…if you’re a fan of the books, you love the movie!!!
I liked it. I thought it was great.
You know, the problem is that NOT everybody has read the books. Many of you say that critics should have read them but tbh, it’s NOT true!
We are talking about movies that were based on books. So, IMO, movie goers have to understand what they see without further information. The movies have to be able to tell you stories on their own for crying out loud.
Twilight movies, IMO, were not able to do that. I saw them with my family who had not read the books and everyone was like ‘OK, I get it but the movies were rushed and not thoroughly explained.’
So, IMO, thumbs up for the critics and thumbs down for Twilight and New Moon movies.
y’know there’s probably a reason critics didn’t read the books…they’re over 14 and have a life, you see…
Both movies sucked. But i dont agree wti hthe first one being better, Catherine is a joke and shouldnt direct another movie ever. Butt like was saying i absolutely love the books, but the movies are so bad their hard to watch. I wish they never ruined the novels by creating such horrible movies. FYI Robet Pattinson is one of the ugliest guys they could have picked to play Edward.
People who like the movies over the books are just stupid period.
i like the books better…they ruin it…
except the HOT guy ^^
I was honestly expecting so much worse when I went to go see New Moon last night. All of the reviews made it seem like the movie was directed by a 5 year old. Honestly, for the fans who have read the book, I don’t think it was that f*cking terrible! I think the biggest problem has to do with the casting job. Jesus, if they wanted two people with no charisma or decent acting skills other than the ability to act apathetic, they found themselves a winning pair. They casted the worst two actors for the part, in my opinion. I think the film would have had a better chance if they hadn’t picked Stewart and Pattinson
Why are people so dismissive and disrespectful about the mentality and feelings of teenagers that love everything and anything to do with this franchise? Were you not a teenager yourself a few years (or decades) back? I would imagine that at some point in your life back then, you had an enormous amount of feeling/craziness over someone or something. I’m sure you, too, didn’t appreciate the fact that those older than you couldn’t understand your devotion over whatever it was you loved. My point is – don’t judge just because you feel the opposite. These kids are having the time of their lives and it’s really not your place to criticize them or demean their feelings – no matter how much it annoys you.
I have issues with how they ended the film .I feel it has over stepped into Eclipse territory and may have possibly ruined the next movie for me .
Just saw the movie, and must admit I was DISAPPOINTED:( I have read the books several times and it just seems like they tried to jam pack everything that happened in the book into the movie and it totally would not have made sense without reading the book. Also I was bored!!!! It was soooooooooo hard to get into the movie, they just kept throwing fact after fact at us but no real story line. I want the original director back!!!!!! Also the music, which is very important since it sets the mood for the scene, sucked big time in New Moon, Twilight was so much better in comparison. There were no major memorable moments in this movie, for example Twilight had the part where Edward saves Bella from being hit by the truck, everything in this movie seemed to float by…..
I’m another fan who loved the movie and am planning to see it a few more times.
okay i thyk it should have been more like the book. omg they left to many good details out of the movie., but i do say it was good. i thyk they should of kept the director catherine hardwicke. it mite have been a bit better
COME ON GUYS!even if new moon made a record by selling 30 million dollars in one or two or i don’t know how many days the result is important.new moon will never make 90.000.000$ like hp neither 1 billion like the dark knight.
I’m a fan of the book and I didn’t love the film at all. Not that I was a fan of the first film either. Whilst New Moon is about heart break and Bella’s struggle to cope with the sudden loss of Edward, I found the key scenes that would truely show her pain were poorly peformed. Whilst I have no aversions to Kristen Stewart I just found her emotionally detached at times…I personally didn’t feel it. Chris definately tried to keep to the book and there were definately more links between the film the book which lacked in the first one. Charlie Swan was not in it enough, Alice was great and Jacob was alright. I know many people will probably disagree with me but that’s what I think. After all the image created in my mind will never reflect the interpretation of the director. But like ‘Me’ says…records are meant to be broken and i’m sure the next installment of Harry Potter will break the recod.
how could anyone compare a movie cool as this to the gay harry potter crap? The critics don’t know jack and Americans aren’t the only ones spending their dimes to see this film, but we sure know how to make them!!!!!!
this movie was so amazing i loved it untiil the end which i must say i am so excited to see the third movie (eclipse) and buy every single movie of the twilight saga…. the critics are stupid and wrong
“Makes history!?!” Exaggerate much? This record will be broken just like this crappy movie broke the records set by the brilliant films: Half Blood Prince and The Dark Knight. I WENT TO SEE THIS MOVIE LAST NIGHT, THE MAJORITY OF GIRLS IN LINE LOOKED OVER 20, SO NO NOT ONLY 12-YEAR-OLDS WATCHED NEW MOON.
I’m a fan of the books, I thought Twilight was an OK movie, it did not, however, do any justice to the book. So I went into New Moon thinking that it was going to suck but, boy, was I wrong. Kristen Stewart’s acting in New Moon was soooooo much better than Twilight, she didn’t come off as awkward. The visuals were great. Taylor and Kristen had great chemistry throughout the movie. Taylor portrays the perfect Jacob, hands down. Robert Pattinson, although, his performance improved in New Moon, I hope he lightens Edward up a bit. In the movie, Edward looks sad all the time, whereas in the books, Edward is charming and more alive. Can’t wait for Eclipse!
Honestly i thought that the movie was way better than the last one and jacob did a really good job at acting but of course its hard to act like you love someone especially when its KStew, for one shes a horrible actor and two shes gross. so thats that,
Wrong. Wrong. wrong!
Please, New Moon was absolutley amazingg!!
Try reading the books before youu start to jugde the movies.
Could care less what critics say, it was even better than Twilight. Annd they will continue advancingg!
I kinda feel like a trader even saying what I really thought of the movie but I gotta say…I was disappointed .I loved Twilight and yes, I’ve read all the books several times so I feel I can be a fair judge. I didn’t like the warmer tone of the film, liked twilight better. I also thought that Kristen, although typically a great actor, didn’t convey they sadness that Bella felt when Edward left. It seemed awkward when she was suppose to be so distraught in the forrest after edward left her.And the lack of chemistry b/t Bella and Jacob and the abscense of Edward had me picking apart the things that seemed wrong. Like the drive to the Volturri, it looked like a kiddie ride, not realistic. The whole scene of the drive to Italy reminded me of a ’70s foreign film. And the constant playing of music was distracting to me. It played even while the elevator music was playing.I did notice that the energy seemed to come back as soon as Edward reappeared. The scene when they were back together did seem real and sweet to me. I watched it twice and liked it more the second time but honestly I think it lacked the intimacy for lack of a better word that Twilight had. That said, I can’t wait for Eclipse. Its my favorite book of the 4 .More Edward =better movie.
I liked the movie, but the book will always be better, but that’s with every movie that’s based on a book.
The only thing that I didn’t like was the length of the movie, it was way too long.
“Makes history!?!” Exaggerate much? This record will be broken just like this crappy movie broke the records set by the brilliant films: Half Blood Prince and The Dark Knight. ur a retard
that was such a good movie
in my opinion the movie doesn’t cover the book at all. There are several important parts which wasn’t seen in the movie. to sum up the movie is all about the actors. who cares!! it should reflect the book/story.
I didnt like the movie. Twilight was good enough to make me go to read all books and become a twilight book fan. being so literal to the book doesnt make it a good movie. In New Moon I cried a lot, and felt Bellas depression, and Jacobs warmth and excellent humor, also the strong love between Bella and Edward, because in Twilight you only read Bellas obsession. ( You have to read midnight sun to see Edwards love). In New Moon, Bella realises that her love is as strong as Edwards, the movie skipped this. I think, this second movie is more to the movie fans than the readers, is all about effects and making money out of it. The music sucked really bad, although the ST is very good it was out of placed in the scenes, most of the time I felt watching a bad version of superman ( for example when she goes to italy). And the Hansel and Gretel scene of Edward and bella runing was ridiculous. At the end Bella told Jacob that she loved him when that is the hole point of their relationship in Eclipse that she realises shes in love with him too, that sucked too. Watching the movie made me feel like the director had no time from the middle to the end to put everything he wanted to put in the movie and just smashed it all in. The reconcialition between B and E is not good enough, when in the book is so beautiful. Too much action parts like in volterra with Felix, with laurent, with Victoria and worst at the end with J and E. That doesnt matter in the book, actually the action is for Eclipse and Breaking D, not this one. Edward breaking the cellphone in Rio was silly. The point of mention Romeo and Juliette in the book was the remind that sometimes in love stupid mistakes makes love tragedies, when in the movie you just think that argument was stupid. Most of the people think that the color of this movie was better than the first, It was to happy, for the hole depression thing, like too good mooddy and sunny. Kristen acted better in the first one, I think she had a better acting direction. Anyway, I hope Eclipse would less bad. In the end, It didnt make me want to watch the next one, like all good movie sagas.
Type your comment here.I loved the first Twilight with the exception of the fake vampire running and tree climbing scenes.Katherine Hardwicke captured the magic in Stephanie Meyers book. I had High hopes that New Moon would be just as good or even better. I was sadly disapointed in the chopped up mess of movie that Chris weintz created, he totally blew it. There were only a couple of good scenes but the movie just didnt have the magic or flow of its first movie. For some reason even Rob Pattinson didnt look as handsome .The music didnt leave me with the feeling that i had to go out and buy the cd. Nor do i have the urge to go see it multiple times at the theater like i did with the first movie. BTW, I have never ever saw a movie at theater move than once before Twilight. Thumbs down for me, i was really disappointed with New Moon.
I COULDNT AGREE MORE !!!!!!!!
