Hey, you know how John Mayer infuriated the entire world yesterday by dropping an N-bomb in his Playboy interview? Yeah, well, you all should cut him a break, because as it turns out he only threw out the racial slur because he felt under pressure to be witty. Yeah, really.

The Battle Studies singer took a brief break during his concert at Sommet Center in Nashville on Wednesday to explain to the audience,

"In the quest to be clever, I completely forgot about the people that I love and that love me."

As Mayer sees it, he had entered a world of "selfishness and greediness and arrogance" and figured that if he could be "speedy and witty and pull together as many fast words and phrases as I could, that I would be clever enough to buy myself another day without anybody pinning me down and saying, 'You're a creep.'"

Which, naturally, led him to casually toss out the N-word during a high-profile interview. Duh!

But don't worry, he's going to stop trying to display his cleverness by spewing hateful, racially insensitive words from now on:

"It's just not worth being clever. I quit the media game. I'm out. I'm done. I just want to play my guitar."

Check out the video of Mayer's explanation below and tell us in the comments section: Were you amused by John Mayer's cleverness?

I'm black definitely a person who would get stereotyped as the ghetto loud black girl at first view and to me he just another dumb ass person losing money. I like Five Finger Death Punch, but I get that white supremacy vibe from them. If they are though at least there not stupid enough to say anything and suffer the blacklash. You feel how you feel, sometimes it serves you better to keep it to yourself. Not really offended more amused, shows his ignorance not mines. If I like his music, I like his music. I don't, so not that much of a change. I like mostly metal anyways, I'm diverse like that. I think the funniest part when he said his d*ck is a white supremacist. Come on that sh*t is funny. Please John Mayer keep talking, so "n*ggas" like me can get a laugh every now and then.

It's a free country - you're free to say something stupid, and I'm free to take my fanship elsewhere. But thanks for the effort at an apology and promising to go back to what you're good at, making great music.

What a A$$$ hole. You don't have to use the N word to be witty and cleaver. He is a pathetic piece of !@#$%. I see his band is mostly African Americans so I wonder how he really sees them. I would not pay to see him or buy and of his music! The real John Mayer speaks out!

I had been waiting to see him in concert since 07 and was planning to travel from FL to TX to see him...but this? No thanks, bro. He won't see a single one of my dollars again. I wouldn't want to offend his giant David Duke dick.

Hopefully he's learned his lesson and quits being so loose-lipped. I think he just tried too hard to be 'clever'. People who are truly 'clever' can do it, effortlessly without offending anyone.
