Kim Kardashian Responds to Kitty-Gate 2010
Who knew that a picture of Kim Kardashian playing with her kitty could spark such mixed emotions? The Keeping Up With the Kardashians gal ignited a firestorm of controversy across the Internet on Monday when she Twittered a behind-the-scenes shot from her photo-shoot over the weekend, depicting Miss K. holding up a black cat by the scruff of its neck.
And in keeping with the tradition of black cats bringing bad luck, Kardashian has received a mountain of flak for the pic, with many claiming that holding an animal in such a manner is harmful to the creature. Even some of Kardashian’s fans have registered their disappointment in the photo’s comments section, with one fan huffing,
“This is really not a nice picture! Do you only think about yourself? You are a beautiful woman from the outside, but by the looks of this picture I am not very thrilled about the way you treat animals.”
Naturally, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has weighed in on the controversy, issuing a statement reading,
“Kim Kardashian isn’t the only person who mistakenly thinks that because a mother cat picks up her kittens by the scruff of the neck that a supportive hand under the rump isn’t needed.”
Responding to the backlash on her official Web site this afternoon, Kardashian issued her own statement, revealing that the photo-shoot was supervised by veterinary professionals and the cat was never in any danger:
“Hey guys! So yesterday I was doing a photo shoot with an adorable black kitty cat and I Twitpic’d this picture…I have been getting negative comments regarding the way I was holding the kitty, but rest assured the owner and vet were on set and showed me how to pick him up. The cat was not harmed in any way and is perfectly fine! I love animals and would never do anything to harm any animals.”
So there you have it, people; no animals were harmed in the creation of this Twit-pic. Nor, for that matter, in the creation of this post. Can we all just calm down now?
