M.I.A. Continues To Rage Against Reporter, Releases New Song

It looks like M.I.A. just isn’t willing to let this go.

Last week, M.I.A. tweeted up a controversy when she publicly tweeted the personal phone number of a New York Times journalist who had written a fairly scathing profile on her. Now the singer has released tapes from the interview that contradict some major parts of the profile and paint her interviewer, Lynn Hirschberg, in a somewhat unethical light.

In the profile, Lynne contrasted images of M.I.A. living the plush life of a wealthy celebrity with her politics, making M.I.A. look like a hypocrite and a spoiled, ignorant brat.

Lynne wrote that M.I.A. “studied the menu, deciding on a glass of wine and French fries” and quoted the singer: “‘I kind of want to be an outsider,’ she said, eating a truffle-flavored French fry.” However, M.I.A. released a tape clearly showing (or, uh, saying?) Lynne ordering the truffle-flavored French fries and pushing them on M.I.A. while the pop star says she just wants something to drink.

While the tape might expose Lynne as an unethical journalist, M.I.A.’s tape might hold more weight if she hadn’t childishly tweeted Lynne’s phone number.

If secret tapes aren’t really your style, M.I.A. has also released a rough cut of a new song about the interview called “I’m A Singer.” In the song, M.I.A. sings: “Why in the hell would journalists be thick as s**t/ Cause lies equals power equals politics.” She also later calls Lynne “a racist.”

Is she milking the controversy? Probably, but we wouldn’t expect anything less from her at this point.
