Justin Bieber Targeted by Anti-Gay Activists

Love-struck tweens aren’t the only people paying attention to Justin Bieber these days. The “Baby” heartthrob has also attracted the attention of Westboro Baptist Church—and it’s not delight they’re shrieking with.

Bieber has become the most recent target of the WBC, infamous for their anti-gay vitriol and numerous protests (such as at last week’s Comic-Con convention in San Diego). The church—led by Kansas-based pastor Fred Phelps—has lashed out at the singer on its website, and members picketed outside of Bieber’s concert at the Sprint Center in Kansas City on Wednesday evening, with their trademark “God Hates Fags” signs in hand.

So what’s their beef with the 16-year-old Bieber? Westboro Baptist feels that the Biebs isn’t using his talents to sufficiently spread God’s will, at least as they interpret it. According to the church’s site,

“[Bieber] has a platform given to him by God to speak to this world; he has a duty to teach obedience by his actions and words. He refuses to do that because he knows his concert halls would be empty! So, he teaches you to sin and rebel against God’s commandments.”

Well, sure, Bieber is sinfully adorable and maybe teenage girls rebel by listening to his music waaaay past their bedtimes, but this seems like a stretch. Perhaps Phelps and his minions should crack open The Holy Bieble for their spiritual guidance in the future.

What do you think? Does Westboro Baptist have a point, or are they just riding Bieber’s coattails to spread a message? Share your opinions in the comments section.
