Gisele Bundchen: You’re a Criminal if You Don’t Breastfeed!

UPDATE: Bundchen has now issued an apology of sorts on her Web site, writing that she’s “not here to judge” with her stance on breastfeeding.

Bundchen writes,

“My intention in making a comment about the importance of breastfeeding has nothing to do with the law. Becoming a new mom has brought a lot of questions, I feel like I am in a constant search for answers on what might be the best for my child…I am sure if I would just be sitting talking about my experiences with other mothers, we would just be sharing opinions. I understand that everyone has their own experience and opinions and I am not here to judge.”

Gisele Bundchen has a message for the new mothers of the world: If you don’t breastfeed your children, you belong behind bars. Or you should at least be subjected to a hefty fine.

In the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK (via Us Magazine), the Brazilian supermodel, who welcomed her first child, son Benjamin, with husband Tom Brady in December, takes a hardcore stance in favor of breastfeeding, for both mother and child’s benefit. In fact, Bundchen says, if she had her way it would be mandated by law:

“I think breastfeeding really helped me keep my figure…Some people here (in the US) think they don’t have to breastfeed, and I think ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?’ I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months.”
