Robert Pattinson vs. Zac Efron: You Decide!
Did Robert Pattinson destroy Zac Efron's chances of becoming Young Hollywood's reigning heartthrob? According to several experts, it just might be so.
In light of the disappointing box office draw of Efron's new high-profile movie, Charlie St. Cloud (reportedly, it's raked in a mere $23 million since its July 30 release, compared to its $44 million budget), PopEater gathered a panel of authorities and asked if the former High School Musical hunk's star has dimmed.
The consensus? Yes—and R-Pattz is largely to blame.
According to relationship expert Matt Titus, Pattinson has overpowered Efron in the teen idol department with his superior understanding of how to play the fame game:
"Robert is the new King of all the screaming girls at this moment and they have forgotten Zac. You only need to look at this year's MTV Movie Awards; when Zac entered the girls were excited but when Robert walked in the place went nuts. Twilight has changed everything and Robert Pattinson gets it. He says nothing, and acts mysteriously. This is what teenage girls really want right now."
But according to New York Times film critic Joe Neumaier, Pattinson isn't the only pretty boy cutting into Efron's percentage in the heartthrob market. The way Neumaier sees it, there's currently a glut of male celebs vying for teenage girls' hearts, and Efron has failed to adequately distance himself from the pack:
"I blame an overcrowded pin-up boy field. Yes, Rob Pattinson is in that jam-packed yearbook but so is Taylor Lautner, some Gossip Girl boys, Shia LaBeouf, the Glee guys and at least one Jonas brother. All these young dudes are now starting to cancel each other out. I think at this point, there's only so many dewy-eyed sulking guys [that] girls can keep track of."

Taylor can't act, they just look at how handsome or how sexy they are. There's no such thing as talent anymore in Hollywood. Its all about the looks and the popularity. On the other hand, I think both guys have natural acting skills. I was obsessed with Robert when I saw him in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' but then Twilight sorta ruined him. People who look at Robert will immediately think of 'Edward Cullen' and people who look at Zachary will immediately think of 'Troy Bolton' but remember, that's where their fame all started. They need to evolve out of their old characters.. especially Robert.. Zachary is getting there because he's doing a lot of movies that involve an older audience and I can't really see him as 'Troy Bolton' anymore but as for Robert.. I will still see him as 'Edward Cullen' for two more years.. even if 'Remember Me' was a good film, all I could think of was "He's a vampire.." I can't wait till the Twilight franchise is over. But good luck to their careers in the future. finally someone who's adding some common sense to this sh*t...

Robert Pattinson just seems more humble than Zac Efron. He likes to goof around and doesn't take himself too seriously. Zac Efron acts so arrogant and can't even crack a smile, not to mention his cheap girlfriend who can't seem to keep her clothes on.

I used to be crazy over Zac when he was in 'High School Musical' and I was abt 12 years old then. Now I've grown older and I've started reading the romantic novels. Twilight was one of my favourites. I love Edward Cullen and when Rob portrayed it, he made me fall in love with Edward more. Rob is a better actor than Zac. But between Rob and Zac, I cant choose who is hotter. They're both hot in their own way. But I still like Zac though. =)

I like both of them but I prefer Rob because he comes across as more ...ummm, soulful I guess? I don't know -- I think High School Musical is corny, and I thought Twilight was corny. Remember Me I loved and Hairspray was decent. But other than the fact that they're of a similar age, I don't think they are comparable at all: their acting styles seem completely different to me and I don't think they'd ever be in the position of being considered for the same role. Personally I don't think Charlie St. Cloud was much of an Efron-style movie -- I see him as more of a comedy guy. I read the book, but didn't see the movie, though, so maybe I'm not giving him enough credit. And let's not forget that the critics were rough on Remember Me, too, so obviously they're both having some trouble escaping the image they've been typecast in. I think they could both do well in later years, and though I typically prefer the films Robert Pattinson chooses to play in, I 'm not anti-Zac, or anything. I don't see why it's such a "competition" -- from what I've read in their respective interviews, the two seem to like and respect one another, so if the goal is to turn this into some sort of battle between them by publishing pieces like this, it isn't working.

I was never for zac even before rob came along. i'm against anything disney. besides charlie st cloud's trailer gave the plot away. a dude going off to college loses his brother and then hallucinates him and has to decide whether or not to move on with some chick in real world or stay behind and watch his life pass by. he either decides or there's some way where he gets to keep both and even some other ppl can see him or w/e not that hard. and i'm not a big taylor fan but i would see anything with taylor over anything with efron.

Why the competition? Both of them are up and coming actors that talented in their own way. There is enough roles between the two. I really don't see either of them going for the same roles anyways. There's no doubt that Rob is the reigning heartthrob and no one else really stands a chance. I don't necessarily see this as a good thing. Efron should be grateful that people aren't obsessing about him anymore because it gives him a better chance to be taken seriously as an actor. He needs to play with this. Efron has been a good sport about this and Rob is in no way a famewhore and would relinquish the title to someone like Taylor Lautner but as long as Rob is Edward Cullen, I don't think this will happen. He embodies Edward perfectly and people love Edward even the ones that hate him are fascinated. I don't think many people are even Team Jacob. I think most people who are Team Jacob are actually Team Not Edward which still means they are fascinated by Edward.
