Newcomer Rooney Mara Cast in 'Dragon Tattoo' Lead
The English-language remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has finally found its Lisbeth Salander.
After white-hot speculation that had a number of big Hollywood names, including Kristen Stewart, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway and Emma Watson, possibly filling the role, relative newcomer Rooney Mara has won the coveted part of the hacker/heroine, a character made famous by the runaway success of the Swedish film of the same title.
As previously reported, James Bond actor Daniel Craig is on board to co-star as journalist Mikael Blomkvist.
American-born actress Mara previously starred in this year's remake of the horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street, and will be seen in the upcoming movie The Social Network, which will chronicle the rise of Facebook and co-stars Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg. The latter film was directed by David Fincher, who will also helm Dragon Tattoo.
The film, based on the Swedish cinematic adaptation of novelist Stieg Larrson's The Millennium Trilogy, will begin filming in Sweden next month and is slated for a December 21, 2011 release. Mara and Craig are also on board for the film's two expected sequels, The Girl Who Played With Fire and the Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.
