Rose Byrne and Oliver Platt to Join 'X-Men: First Class' Cast
Hollywood just got a lot more mutated.
According to reports, Damages actress Rose Byrne is in negotiations to star in the upcoming superhero flick X-Men: First Class, while 2012 actor Oliver Platt has signed on for the production, joining a cast that already includes Twilight's Edi Gathegi, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon and Nicolas Hoult.
Should Byrne—who's currently filming the Kristen Wiig comedy Bridesmaids—sign on the dotted line, she'll play the part of Moira MacTaggert, a scientist specializing in genetic mutation. (The character also serves as the love interest of telepathic X-Men honcho Charles Xavier, who'll be portrayed by McAvoy.)
Meanwhile, Platt—who also stars with Laura Linney in the new Showtime series The Big C—will star as a character named The Man in Black, who is not a mutant. (We're also assuming that, despite the character name, he's also not a Johnny Cash impersonator.)
X-Men First Class, which will be directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass), is scheduled to begin shooting at the end of August in London for a June 3, 2011 release.
