Selena Gomez: ‘I Really Need’ to Learn Spanish

/ August 26, 2010

Selena Gomez’s family may have Mexican roots, but that doesn’t mean that she can speak Spanish.

The Wizards of Waverly Place star recently told Latina magazine that she is hoping to brush up on her Spanish skills:

I really want to get Rosetta Stone, because I really need to learn my language. I practice [Spanish], but I can understand it better than I can speak it. So in a lot of my interviews that I did recently, they would speak to me in Spanish and I would answer back in English. They were like, ‘You pick it up so easily,’ but I don’t want to say it in Spanish because I’d be embarrassed if I mess something up.

The 18-year-old teen queen said that she used to think you had to speak Spanish fluently to be a “real” Latina, but she changed her mind when she saw that people accepted her regardless of what language she spoke.

The Ramona and Beezus beauty is half-Hispanic: Her father is Mexican-American and her mother is Italian-American.

Selena isn’t the only Latina actress who doesn’t speak Spanish: both Jessica Alba and Cameron Diaz readily admit that they can’t speak their native tongue fluently.
