Selena Gomez: 'I Really Need' to Learn Spanish

Selena Gomez: 'I Really Need' to Learn Spanish-photo

Selena Gomez's family may have Mexican roots, but that doesn't mean that she can speak Spanish.

The Wizards of Waverly Place star recently told Latina magazine that she is hoping to brush up on her Spanish skills:

I really want to get Rosetta Stone, because I really need to learn my language. I practice [Spanish], but I can understand it better than I can speak it. So in a lot of my interviews that I did recently, they would speak to me in Spanish and I would answer back in English. They were like, 'You pick it up so easily,' but I don’t want to say it in Spanish because I’d be embarrassed if I mess something up.

The 18-year-old teen queen said that she used to think you had to speak Spanish fluently to be a "real" Latina, but she changed her mind when she saw that people accepted her regardless of what language she spoke.

Watch Selena struggling with her Spanish in the Wizards of Waverly Place movie.

The Ramona and Beezus beauty is half-Hispanic: Her father is Mexican-American and her mother is Italian-American.

Selena isn't the only Latina actress who doesn't speak Spanish: both Jessica Alba and Cameron Diaz readily admit that they can't speak their native tongue fluently.

Well aside from not living with their spanish speaking parent they have no excuse to not even speak a little bit of it. I was born in the US by spanish speaking parents and guess what? Thats the first thing I learned because that was the only way they could communicate.

it's harder than you think. plus all those women that were mentioned in the article were born in the US so spanish isnt technically their native language. its the language of their heritage but not native.

YEAH, I hate when you have to know how to read, write and talk in your language. kind of annoying. but i think Selena should! she's one to stick with something and keep going, so yeah, that'd be cool! but i think it's funny how she randomly says this. i read somewhere that nick j loves when sel sings in spanish... could this relate? :D

if she understands it, than she is well on her way. I'm pretty sure she can learn it if she puts time to it. But she should not be embarrassed to speak it as she learns it, she has to start somewhere. Practice, practice, practice. My parents taught me Spanish when i was around 7, I can speak it and write it , best thing that ever happened to me, I
