Celebrity Chef Michelle Bernstein: LA is a True Foodie City

Miami native Michelle Bernstein is a James Beard Award-winning chef who has made numerous television appearances, including as a regular guest judge on the Emmy-winning “Top Chef.” Celebuzz asked her to gives us the low down on the best places to eat around the globe. Today, she takes us to Los Angeles.

As a chef, and one who travels quite a bit at that…I always dread going to cities that don’t have much to offer in the way of great food or liveliness. Los Angeles has become in the last few years, a true foodie city. With the help of some celebrity chefs opening restaurants like Pizzeria Mozza and Animal and others starting some of the best food trucks in the country, the city has gained some serious well-deserved PR in the food world.

I was there working on a Pilot recently, cant talk about it as its kinda hush hush, and I did a lot of late night dining. One night we went to Animal owned by two young resilient chefs that once worked for me in Miami (Jon and Vinny). We started with hamachi sashimi with mandarin granita and ended with foie gras loco moco; it was ridiculous! In a good way.

The next night we scored a table at Pizzeria Mozza and indulged in pizza covered with zucchini blossoms. I had a hard time concentrating as the lead singer of the Maroon 5 was at the next table. But of course, I was instantly brought back to reality with best remedy, Chef Nancy’s butterscotch budino that is literally something I could eat every day of my life. (Check out a recipe for my version of butterscotch pudding.)

Finally, thanks to Twitter I found what I was looking for the whole time I was in LA. The Kogi food truck with Korean Beef Tacos that are so deliciously addictive it will make you cry for more as they are driving away. Chef Roy Choi told me as he was packing up that he used to love watching me on Food Network, back in the day which made my stomach turn over, but not enough to stop me from taking another bite of his celestial cuisine.
