Update: PETA Pans Lady Gaga’s VMA Meat Dress (VIDEO)

First a meat bikini, then a meat dress (and cap and booties) at the VMAs — maybe, just maybe, is Lady Gaga trying to stir up a little controversy?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) isn’t pleased with Gaga’s carniverous ensemble, telling TMZ that “wearing a dress made from cuts of dead cows is offensive” and adding that if the meat under the VMA lights was real, it was likely “crawling in maggots.”

In an appearance today on the season premiere of The Ellen Degeneres Show taped right after her 8-Moonman sweep, Gaga swears she’s not trying to make animal-lovers mad:

It is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian… As you know, I am the most judgement-free human being on the earth. However, it has many interpretations. For me… if we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon, we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones. And, I am not a piece of meat.

Gaga added that she was standing up for gay rights in the wake of the U.S. House of Representative’s overturning of the military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy in May. The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on repealing DADT later this year.

All that being said, vegan Ellen still presented Gaga with a vegetarian bikini made of lettuce, kale and broccoli, which Gaga deemed “fabulous.”
