Super-Producer Sean Garrett: I’m Going to Make Bieber No. 1

You might not know his name (yet), but super-producer Sean Garrett is the man behind some of modern music’s biggest hits, including Beyonce’s “Ring the Alarm,” Usher’s “Yeah” and the Pussycat Dolls’ “Buttons.” With 17 #1 hits (and counting) to his credit, Garrett is currently working with Beyonce, Britney Spears, and Justin Bieber while also stepping out as an artist in his own right. Celebuzz caught up with Garrett about his superstar collaborations, how he’s going to turn Justin Bieber into a chart-topping artist (he currently hasn’t hit #1) and why he could be the next Kanye West (… or Lionel Richie).

You just got out of the studio with Beyonce – what can you tell us about that?

She told me to be quiet and don’t tell anybody about what she’s doing (laughs), but I can definitely tell you this is going to be her biggest project ever. It was beyond incredible.

We don’t want to get you in trouble with Beyonce, but what is she like during the music-making process?

She has such a high level of professionalism. Her work ethic is unbelievable. A lot of people tell me I’m the hardest worker they’ve ever met, but I can definitely say she works harder than me. She definitely has that focus you are only born with and that’s one reason why I think she and I get along so well.  When people hear she and I were getting together, everybody revs their engine up.

You’re currently working with the one and only Justin Bieber. Is he going to take his sound in a more adult direction?

It’s like I told Chris Brown, you have to be careful to walk a thin line. I have that expertise to make sure everyone likes it. At the end of the day, I’m here for Justin. The type of things that I’m doing for him are just number ones. Justin hasn’t had a number one yet and that’s what I do; I’m a hitmaker. I’m going to give Justin two, three number ones. I met Justin three years ago, well before he signed his deal with Usher. I was so upset that I didn’t get to sign him but Usher and I are very dear friends so it is all in the family.

You’re getting ready to collaborate with Britney Spears on her new album – what direction should she go in?

My job is to go in and give the artist something that they haven’t had before. The key is being able to say what hasn’t been said and with Britney, a lot has been said. The bar is really, really high. It’s time to take Britney back to where she started.

Do you think her music has hit a low?

I don’t think Britney has lost it at all and that’s what I’m focused on making sure doesn’t happen. She’s been through a lot and came out shining as one of the biggest pop icons. My hat’s off to her. She’s a very sweet woman and I’m very proud of her accomplishments.

You’re a rapper in your own right now, releasing a mixtape album called “Inkwell” featuring a breakout single “Feel Love,” featuring Drake.

The market right now is at such a great place. Music is back to the artist. The artist matters again. My brand is definitely for real. The artist who’s most comparable to me is Kanye West. Kanye was incredible, bending the boards producing for Jay-Z and a lot of people knew how hungry he was to be an artist. That’s Sean Garrett.

Will you give up producing to strike out on your own full-time?

I’m the modern-day Lionel Richie. Lionel did it all. He’s a great businessman, a superb artist and an incredible songwriter and producer. There’s no box you can put me in – I’m a triple theat.
