Angelina Jolie to Go 3D in ‘Cleopatra’?
Angelina Jolie, in all her beautiful glory as the Queen of the Nile, popping out on the screen in 3D? And directed by James Cameron? As improbable as it may seem, it could happen.
Deadline New York reports that Avatar helmsman Cameron is in preliminary talks to direct Jolie’s upcoming biopic Cleopatra, based on the Stacy Schiff biography Cleopatra: A Life. And Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chair Amy Pascal is said to be so keen on the idea of a 3D Cleopatra movie that the project has been fast-tracked, after reading a script for the movie that’s being described as a “brilliant script deserving of epic treatment.”
Though Jolie—who’s currently filming her somewhat troubled directorial debut overseas—hasn’t officially signed on for the project, the movie is being developed specifically with her in mind, and she has said that she “would be honored” to play the Egyptian queen, who has been portrayed most memorably in the past by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 film Cleopatra. Seeking to distinguish herself from her predecessor, Jolie has noted,
“I will play it differently to Elizabeth Taylor, but I could never be as lovely as she was. We are trying to uncover the truth about her as a leader and not just a sex symbol which she really wasn’t—she didn’t have many lovers, maybe only two, and they’re men she had children with.”
Sony’s Pascal hopes that the project will start filming sometime next year.
