Did Taylor Swift Write A Song For John Mayer?

/ October 19, 2010

Fans already know that Kanye West and (probably) Taylor Lautner are getting the Taylor Swift song treatment on her upcoming album, Speak Now. (Recall Taylor’s barefoot pity-fest for West at the VMAs and the apology song “Back to December” rumored to be about “best friend” T-Laut.) Now it appears Swift is giving another famous dude a lyrical shout-out, reportedly revealing she had a short-lived romance with John Mayer!

According to Yahoo! music blogger Chris Willman, Swift’s new track “Dear John” is a slap to Mayer, with whom Swift may have had a failed relationship. Though Swift stops short of confirming Mayer’s identity, she tells Willman she wasn’t afraid to name names in her new tunes. Check out the lyrics:

Dear John/I see it all now that you’re gone/Don’t you think I was too young/To be messed with/The girl in the dress/Cried the whole way home/I should’ve known.” A second version of the chorus includes the lines: “It was wrong/Don’t you think nineteen’s too young/To be played/By your dark, twisted games/When I loved you so.

How did Mayer, who is twelve years Swift’s senior, manage to woo the star with the pristine rep? Let’s just say her notoriously protective mom wasn’t keen on it:

My mother accused me of losing my mind/But I swore I was fine…” And: “You’ll add my name to your long list of traitors who don’t understand/And I’ll look back in regret I ignored what they said/’Run as fast as you can’.

It’s times like these when we really wish we could turn to Mayer’s Twitter feed for an off-the-cuff response, but alas, we are left to contact reps for both musicians and await response.

Do you think “Dear John” is about Mayer? Weigh in via the comments.
