Ryan Gosling: Mickey Mouse Club Was ‘Depressing’

While The All-New Mickey Mouse Club launched the careers of stars like and Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, not every Mouseketeer was feeling the Mickey love.

Ryan Gosling opened up to Steve Carrell in Interview magazine about his less-than-awesome experience on the show. Hey, when you’re cast with three kids who will go on to become major pop stars, it is easy to understand why you might feel uncomfortable on the show.

“It was kind of depressing,” said the Blue Valentine star, “When I got there, they realized that I wasn’t really up to snuff in comparison with what some of the other kids were able to do. I would just come in at the beginning of the show and then come back at the end, and occasionally I’d have a sketch here or there, but I didn’t end up working that much, which was disheartening.”

However, the Mouseketeer experience wasn’t all wind-blown ballads with future pop stars–Ryan remembers an adult dancer who would sneak him and other cast members into clubs.

“It was completely inappropriate, now that I’m thinking about it, but he would sneak us in and we would go to a club there called 8 Trax and dance with the secretaries, who were grinding on us . . . Now, that sounds completely inappropriate. I can’t imagine how it was possible.”

Ryan eventually left his mouse ears behind to go on to star in The Notebook and Lars and the Real Girl.
