Johnny Depp to Replace Robert Downey Jr. in 'Wizard of Oz' Remake?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor is in discussions with Disney to replace Robert Downey Jr. as the fabled illusionist in their revamp of The Wizard of Oz, which is to be titled Oz, the Great and Powerful.
The movie, which has no release date yet, will be directed by Sam Raimi (until recently, of the Spider-Man movie series) and will chronicle the wizard's journey to the magical land of Oz in a hot-air balloon, after being forced to flee a traveling circus. Downey left the project due to an increasingly busy schedule.
Schedule conflicts might also come into play in drafting Depp for the role; the actor's always-full dance card already includes the Tim Burton-directed big-screen adaptation of the vampire soap opera Dark Shadows, as well as a revamp of The Lone Ranger, in which he'll play the titular character's faithful sidekick, Tonto.
