Is Johnny Depp off to be the wizard?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor is in discussions with Disney to replace Robert Downey Jr. as the fabled illusionist in their revamp of The Wizard of Oz, which is to be titled Oz, the Great and Powerful.

The movie, which has no release date yet, will be directed by Sam Raimi (until recently, of the Spider-Man movie series) and will chronicle the wizard's journey to the magical land of Oz in a hot-air balloon, after being forced to flee a traveling circus. Downey left the project due to an increasingly busy schedule.

Schedule conflicts might also come into play in drafting Depp for the role; the actor's always-full dance card already includes the Tim Burton-directed big-screen adaptation of the vampire soap opera Dark Shadows, as well as a revamp of The Lone Ranger, in which he'll play the titular character's faithful sidekick, Tonto.

Do you think that Depp would make a good replacement for Downey in Oz? Share your predictions in the comments section.

Here's a suggestion: Stop re-making these movies!!! Stop fuckin up the classics and come up with new ideas. This has gotten as bad as sampling in the music industry. My Lord!!!

I agree with the above, the classics Alice and Wonka turned out poorly. To stay close to the original script would have to have a more subdued professor Oz. My pick for the other characters would be Nathan Lane for the Lion, Hugh Jackmosn for the Tin Man, Tammy Blanchette for the Judy Role, Angela Landsbury for Auntie E, possibly Kristin Chenoworth for Glinda.

Johnny Depp is 1000x better than RDJ. Johnny would be so flawless in this, but he's flawless in everything he does. (:

i think they are putting him exactly where he belongs why not give him the roles he fits. and he is one of the best actors to come on the screen in a VERY long time.

Seriously? Just hearing this makes my blood boil because They already f*cked up Alice in Wonderland and Willy Wonka, not that it was wholly Johnny Depp's fault. I'm just tired of seeing him in all these same whimsical genre films. It's the same act everytime! An actor is supposed to be versatile, and when I see Johnny Depp in all these SIMILAR roles I just see "Johnny Depp"! Give it a REST! It doesn't have to be Robert Downey Jr. But please just use your GODDAMN imagination, Hollywood, for the love of god! It's bad enough you're remaking a beautiful classic which I'm 90% cure is going to be a f*cking abomination compared to the original, at least vary the talent!

I would like to see Johnny Depp to replace Downey, for these reasons: 1) Depp has been doing a good job creating face and mystery to these characters that not necessary have a definite shape. He's pretty good at romance, comedy, suspense, and horror movies. So why not taking up this role. I'm 100% confident he'll be awesome. Plus, people watch certain movies (no matter to it being good or bad) for certain actors. And I believe Depp has created a great audience. 2) Downey is a straight-forward actor, he has always taken up roles that suit his own personality. He really can not create a mysterious character. So, if Depp takes the role (not Downey) i'm pretty confident that the movie success rate will be high.

It didn't take Johnny Depp to ruin one of my favorite childhood stories - all it took was listening to "Wicked" very, very carefully! (Okay, just so you know - I LOVE "Wicked", the musical.) I just have one entsy, wentsy problem with it... In "The Wizard of Oz", Dorothy has to go get the "Wicked Witch of the West's" broomstick to "prove" that she killed the Witch - right? Well, as it just so happens, in "Wicked" we "discover" that the "Wizard" loved ALL things GREEN; hence "The Emerald City"... Now, is it "just me" - or are YOU squirming in your seats as well to "Maybe" realize that a Father put out a HIT on his own Daughter? Or, was the Wizard setting up Dorothy to be killed? (True, "no one" was supposed to "know" that Elfeba's mother "strayed" outside of marriage, but, that's canon in Wicked!)

Although I personally enjoy Depp and his work, I can understand where you're all coming from. But honestly, can you really see Downey as Oz? I'm trying to imagine it and I can't. Oz is supposed to be mysterious and relatively creepy (if that's the right word for it), and Depp continuously proves in his films that he can do that. I feel like Downey's personality can't fit the part well.

OMG! are you guys all serious?! Depp is awesome! his talent gives a different perspective to our old favourites. That's why it's a remake! if it's a copy just go watch the old one!! he's able to breath life into these old characters that we know and love and allow us to still be watching something new and fresh rather then the same old thing. It's wat hollywood is doing now to make lazy money, since that is not gona change i'm glad there's talent like depp to keep the industry going!!

I actually agree w/ Casey and Anna on this one. Just because Oz is a kind of movie that depp would do doesn't mean he has to star on it. Find someone else I'm sure someone else can do a good job as well.
