‘Harry Potter’ Star’s Brother Gets Six Months in Jail
E! Online reports that Ashraf Azad, 28, has been sentenced to six months in prison for the attack on his sister, which occurred in May 2010, after he became enraged to discover that his 21-year-old sibling had been dating a non-Muslim man. According to court testimony, Ashraf overheard Azad—who plays Harry Potter’s classmate Padma Patil in the movie series—speaking to her Hindu boyfriend, at which point he grabbed her by the hair, threw her across the room and punched her several times, resulting in bruising and swelling for the actress. (Azad eventually escaped the torment by fleeing through a window.)
In handing down the sentence, the judge in the case told Azad,
“This is a sentence that is designed to punish you for what you did and also to send out a clear message to others that domestic violence involving circumstances such as have arisen here cannot be tolerated.”
Afshan actually pleaded with the court not to jail her brother, stating in a letter to the court that she had “forgiven” him.
The actress’ father, Abdul Azad, was earlier cleared of making death threats toward her in the case.
