Katy Perry Announces 'Broadway'-Style World Tour
Katy Perry will be taking her show on the road on February 20 with her first arena-size world tour, and she doesn't plan to do things halfway.
The 26-year-old "Teenage Dream" singer, who wed British comedian Russell Brand late last year, sat down with Rolling Stone to lay out her plans for the 95-show California Dreams tour, and the spectacle she described makes Ringling Bros. circus sound like a Bible study session.
"I just really want to raise the bar. Touring is no longer an ordinary thing where you play an instrument in jeans and a T-shirt. It has some pizazz these days, and I'm definitely bringing the pizazz with a lot of bells and whistles. The show has a Broadway feel to it. It's got a storyline that's going to be very interesting, kind of loosely based on my life, but a cartoon version."The curvaceous "I Kissed a Girl" belter goes on to reveal that the show will draw heavily from the aesthetic of her "California Gurls" video, with images of candy and baked goods factoring heavily into the stage set:
"I have this whole thing in my show that is about candy and cupcakes and meat. It's both really sweet and shocking, but not in a sexual way."
Perhaps best of all? The concerts will present a feast for the nose as well as the eyes and ears. Says Perry,
"It's the first concert that's going to smell good. It's going to smell like you're in cotton candy heaven. It's a fun little nuance. I am a woman of detail, and you will be seeing that — even down to the 15 outfit changes I'm doing in concert."Sounds like concertgoers should avoid filling up on dinner too much before heading to the venue—they'll probably want to save room for dessert. Perry's California Dreams world tour kicks off in Portugal and will run for most of the year before wrapping up in Dublin on November 2. (Click here for a full list of tour dates.)
