Lady Gaga’s Born This Way album was supposed to have an exclusive special edition only available at Target stores, but that deal has fizzled and it’s reportedly because of differences in the politics of gay rights between Gaga and the retail mammoth.

Reports say that Gaga has backed out of the deal because of the store’s history of supporting and donating to politicians with an anti-gay rights agenda. A source for The Advocate says that Gaga and Target “didn’t see eye to eye on Target’s policy of political donations and how they affect the LGBT community.”

In an interview with Billboard, Gaga recently reflected on Target’s past, and how the deal came about despite her hesitations:

“That discussion was one of the most intense conversations I’ve ever had in a business meeting … Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they’ve made in the past … our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they’ve made supporting those [antigay] groups.”

Many took a stance against Target when it was revealed they backed MN Forward, a political action committee that gave support to Minnesota State Rep. Tom Emmer’s failed 2010 governor campaign.
