The Meet & Greet: Freddie Smith, the Newest ‘90210’ Hottie – Exclusive

Welcome back to Celebuzz’s Meet & Greet, where we talk with rising actors, musicians and entertainers before they hit it big. Watch out for these future A-listers!

Fans may recognize the handsome Freddie Smith as Marco, the new gay  love interest for Teddy Montgomery in 90210, but the Ohio-born actor isn’t content with just playing a minor character, he has bigger dreams (and bigger story lines) in the future.

How does it feel now that 90210 is coming back from hiatus and fans will finally see the main arc of your storyline?

It’s exciting. I started shooting this in December so it’s been a long-awaited journey. I’m really looking forward to the hiatus coming to an end and for the episodes to air.

In the show you play the love interest for Teddy Montgomery (Trevor Donovan) and the two of you share a passionate kiss – was this your first on-screen kiss?

My first with a guy. Not my first ever [on-screen kiss]. I did a film a couple years ago that I had a kissing scene with a  girl but this is my first one with a guy on screen.

Was it different kissing a guy on-screen than kissing a girl or is it kind of the same since it is all on camera?

It’s kinda the same. Whether you’re kissing a girl or a guy it’s kinda the same because you’re acting and you’re really trying to go through the scene and do it how it’s supposed to be done.

The only thing that was difficult that we did laugh about was that he’s taller than me and I’ve never been with someone who is taller so we were like, well, which way do you turn your head and there were a lot of moments with me and him that was just like I started dating all over again because it’s all about who’s leading, who’s doing this, which way do I turn. It was really fun just finding the chemistry and just making it work between us.

What has the reception been to you playing a gay character on a popular teen TV show?

It’s been wonderful. I was really excited to play the role and there’s been so much good feedback on it. I’ve had people Facebook message me from all over and a couple people have sent me fan mail with pictures. It’s so touching that people take time to send these things to me because they appreciate my work. It just means a lot to me that I can make a difference as well as entertain [people] and have fun and work hard. It is a great perk.

This show is kind of your big break, has your life changed at all since your episodes started airing?

Everything has changed, I went from having a certain routine to just getting so much more busy. I’ve had interviews and photo shoots and auditions and work and there’s just so much more going on so it’s definitely changed my life in that aspect where I’m just super busy now. I t’s great because I don’t like being bored, the more stuff I have to do the better.

I haven’t had anyone yet come up to me in the streets but I just feel honored to have people recognize me because my episode was only a two minute clip. It’s been great.

What was it like joining an established cast on a hit show? Was it difficult to mesh with everyone?

It was actually pretty easy, I was a little nervous at first because I knew that they were all friends and they had worked together for a long time but as soon as I got there everyone was very welcoming to me. They welcomed me, they made me comfortable, if I had any questions they helped me out and after the first couple days I felt like I had been there for years.

Were there any cast members that you bonded with in particular?

Definitely Trevor. In the first few episodes the scenes were just between me and him so we spent a lot of time hanging out and I really got to know him and he helped me out with everything. In the last three episodes I got to work with everyone else, especially in the final two episodes, it was a lot of fun.

Prom is obviously a big episode that everyone is looking forward to, can you give us any hints about what to expect?

I can’t really say much about it except that it’s amazing. When I showed up to set that day I was blown away, it’s going to be the craziest prom and I’m looking forward to seeing how it turned out as well but I think it’s going to be exciting for everyone so it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Did you go to your own prom?

Yes I did. It was a great time, I hung out with all of my friends, danced, it was a very fun night. I was thinking back because once we did this episode we were all talking about our proms, like, who did we go with, what did we do, so we started thinking about it.

Was this prom better than your high school prom?

It’s a lot bigger! From a prom in a  small town in Ohio to a Beverly Hills prom is completely different! [Laughs.] It was great to go to this one because it was just huge and amazing and I had a lot of fun filming it.

The 90210 cast is often followed by the paparazzi while filming – how do you guys deal with photographers while you are trying to work?

We were shooting on location one day and the paparazzi did show up and they were hanging out in the hills but we only had so much time because of the sunlight so we had to be done by the time the sun went down. We couldn’t do anything about it because we needed to get the shots done before the sun went down so we didn’t stop or anything, we just went about our day and just did our work and left.

Are there any shows other than 90210 that you would like a guest or reoccurring role on?

I really enjoy Modern Family, I think that’s one of the funniest shows. It has great acting, great writing, great everything so to be in something like that would be amazing. I would love to have a guest spot on there or a reoccurring spot if that could happen.

Are there any other actors that you look up to?

I go through phases where I’ll see someone’s performance and then I’ll rent all their stuff because they do things that really inspire me. Leonardo DiCaprio is phenomenal, I’ve watched every single thing he’s ever done. Matt Damon, Will Smith, Johnny Depp – these are the people that I just have to go see their movies because their work is just so good.

Do you have any big projects lined up now that you’ve wrapped this season of 90210?

I do, unfortunately they are keeping it under wraps. It’s driving me crazy because it’s such a great role and I want to talk about it but as soon as I find out I’m going to let everyone know.

Are there any kind of hints you can give us about the season finale?

I really can’t say much, there’s going to be a lot leading up to it. When we first sat down for the table reading and I was reading the script and I was like ‘Oh my god!’ It’ll keep you on the edge of your seat, everyone is going to love it but I can’t really talk too much about it because it’s going to be big and I want everyone to be surprised.

Will you be returning to the show next season?

There’s a great possibility so I’m just hoping that I will, I haven’t heard the word either way but I think it’s definitely looking like I will.

You recently posed for the NOH8 campaign and Celebuzz will be exclusively premiering the photo on Tuesday – how did the shoot go?

I did that a couple weeks ago, maybe a month ago. We went and did the photo shoot and it was a great time, the guys that do it are very smart and very nice and it takes maybe five minutes to do the shoot and everything is already set up. It was a great shoot.

Check back at Celebuzz on Tuesday, April 12 for Freddie’s NOH8 campaign photo and be sure to watch Freddie on 90210 when it comes back from hiatus on April 18.
