In an American Idol first, a former contestant is releasing his debut video with donated funds. Tim Halperin, who was one of the top 12 guys this season, took it upon himself to make his musical dreams come true — with a little help from his fans!

He performed the original track, “The Last Song,” for the judges during his Idol run, which catapulted him to the top 24. Tim didn’t let getting eliminated from the show stop the single — and accompanying video — from being released. How did he pull it together?

The singer took it upon himself to gather a crew of filmmakers (and dozens of volunteers) in his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, to make the video on a budget of $8,000 – completely donated by online supporters.

The song is currently available as a free download at his website — it will also be included on his new full-length album, scheduled for independent release this September.
