Cory Monteith Reveals Drug Addict Past: ‘I’m Lucky To Be Alive’
“I’m lucky to be alive,” Cory tells Parade. “I burned a lot of bridges. I had a serious problem.”
The Glee actor reveals that he began skipping school to get drunk and do drugs when he was just 13 years old. The Canadian star dropped out of school when he was 16 and first entered rehab when he was 19. Say it ain’t so, Finn!
“I did the stint but then went back to doing exactly what I left off doing,” Cory tells the magazine. It wasn’t until Cory was caught stealing “a significant amount of money” from a family member that his family told him to get clean for good or go to jail.
“I was done fighting myself,” Cory says of his turning point. “I finally said, ‘I’m gonna start looking at my life and figure out why I’m doing this.’”
Luckily for us, Cory made an amazing recovery, getting clean and finding salvation in working as an actor. “I don’t want kids to think it’s okay to drop out of school and get high, and they’ll be famous actors, too,” Cory tells Parade. “But for those people who might give up: Get real about what you want and go after it. If I can, anyone can.”
