Cory Monteith may be famous for his boyish good-looks, but the 29-year-old actor reveals that his past is anything but innocent.

"I'm lucky to be alive," Cory tells Parade. "I burned a lot of bridges. I had a serious problem."

The Glee actor reveals that he began skipping school to get drunk and do drugs when he was just 13 years old. The Canadian star dropped out of school when he was 16 and first entered rehab when he was 19. Say it ain't so, Finn!

"I did the stint but then went back to doing exactly what I left off doing," Cory tells the magazine. It wasn't until Cory was caught stealing "a significant amount of money" from a family member that his family told him to get clean for good or go to jail.

“I was done fighting myself,” Cory says of his turning point. “I finally said, ‘I’m gonna start looking at my life and figure out why I’m doing this.’”

Luckily for us, Cory made an amazing recovery, getting clean and finding salvation in working as an actor. "I don’t want kids to think it’s okay to drop out of school and get high, and they’ll be famous actors, too," Cory tells Parade. "But for those people who might give up: Get real about what you want and go after it. If I can, anyone can.”

While Cory's addiction story may be surprising to Glee fans, it isn't exactly rare in Hollywood, as evidenced by Lindsay Lohan continuing troubles with alcohol and partying.

Cory is currently gearing up for his major film debut alongside Selena Gomez and Leighton Meester in Monte Carlo.

This story is truly amazing. I think his comment "I don’t want kids to think it’s okay to drop out of school and get high, and they’ll be famous actors, too,” is the best attitude to have. The most important thing is he realized he was going down a bad road, and made a conscious effort to change. By pursuing something with a passion, and without drugs to fuel the passion, he is now completely successful, and I can only assume, much happier. This just goes to show we never know where our life will take us. The one thing we do need to remember is that we are in control of our life. If you ever feel out of control, that’s a clear indication that something is wrong. So good for you Corey, you are an amazing example, and an amazing talent, and thank you for sharing such an intimate detail of your life. I guarantee someone will read this article and think twice about what they are doing with their life. And to the rest of the world who put actors and actresses on a pedestal, I do not dispute they should be acknowledged for their gifts; however this story proves they are just like us. We are all human, all people. Thanks again Corey.
