Jason Derulo Talks Love, Stalkers & Dream Collaboration with Demi Lovato
On the heels of his recent Teen Choice Awards performance, Jason Derulo is proving he's gotten a bit edgier (and sexier) since he first hit the scene in 2009. The "Whatcha Say" singer, whose sophomore album debuts Sept. 27, has an allure and addictive beats that keep you wanting more.
Celebuzz caught up with the 21-year-old singer (and popped a few bottles of Cîroc) at his rooftop Future History listening party in NYC to chat about his new music, how he's dealing with stalkers and his search to find his perfect "It Girl."
Your first single is all about finding your "It Girl." In real life, are you on the hunt?
It's not a search but about being more open. I'm 21 years old and riding this amazing wave. Hopefully, I find that girl. I wrote the song based on me finding that girl and pictured what it'd be like. That song is how I want to feel, but I haven't felt that way yet for a girl.
What can a girl do to get your attention? She can be polite. She has to laugh with me because I tend to be kind of crazy. She has to have fun with me.
"Be Careful" is a song on the upcoming album. Are the rumors true that its about one of your stalkers? Yeah... It was a shock to me. I thought we'd have one night together, but that wasn't the case. I learned my lesson. You have to be careful of other people's feelings.
Will it be awkward if she's at your show, and you start singing this tune? No. Not at all. I want to let everybody know: Be careful who you sleep with.
Tell me about the rest of the record. It's an open book. The evolution of me. I was 19 when I wrote my first record. Now I'm 21. If I wanted to say something sexual, I say it. If I wanted to say something that might be offensive to some people, I didn't have any problem saying it. But I still represent the fact that if you want something bad enough, you can do it. If you work hard and make it your life, you can achieve anything you want to.
Okay. Seriously though, who would be your dream collaboration? Demi Lovato. She is an amazing vocalist and a sweet girl. Most celebrities I meet, I pretty much hate, but she is a sweet person... As far as other collaborations, the sky is the limit. I like making music, so whatever happens, happens.
Any tour plans after the record drops? I'll hit the road in February. We'll be stopping in the UK, Australia and U.S.
You recently toured with Lady Gaga. How was that? She's amazing. I had a blast on tour. She is one of the few celebs I like. She's a sweet girl. And on tour, every night felt like Halloween because of all the costumes.
Did she give you an fashion tips? (Laughs) No. No tips on how to wear a meat dress.
