Grammy Award-winning singer Mya will put her best foot forward in the ING New York City Marathon this weekend, as she aims to raise $200,000 for shelter animals of North Shore Animal League America. And she’s not letting ankle surgery get in the way of her finishing her first(!) marathon.

Celebuzz sat down with her to get the scoop on her training — and of course, talk about her dating life and her eighth studio album.

It’s so exciting that you’re running the New York marathon. What made you decide to do this?

Well I’ve been a supporter of North Shore Animal League for years. I’m an animal lover and a pet owner of five. North Shore Animal League’s effort to save millions of lives — that would otherwise be ended due to lack of shelter space across the United States —  is near and dear to my heart. This is a great way to raise money, alongside getting in shape simultaneously.

Have you noticed any weight loss while training?
I’ve actually gained some weight — probably muscle weight. I haven’t lost a pound. I’m able to eat a lot more than I’m used to, which is great. Food is a highlight of my day. I’m loving it, but my feet would disagree with me. I’ve never done anything like this in my life before so this is my first marathon.

Are you nervous?
Slightly nervous. I’ve only gotten up to about 12 miles in one workout session, so I eventually have to double that plus 2.2 miles. I’m going to try and get up to at least 18 miles, so I don’t scare myself on race day… I decided about three months ago this was something I wanted to do, so I just started running on the treadmill. Coming from last year’s ankle surgery, I said ‘You know what? I’m just going to go for it.’ Although you’re supposed to be training for 18 weeks minimum, I’m fine because I’m allowed to walk and here’s no target time. It’s just about getting across the finish line for me.

Were you worried that your ankle surgery would inhibit you from finishing the race?
Well I was a little nervous, but I began to run independently without a trainer, and my ankle started to feel a lot better. Just for backup purposes, I got a couple of MRI’s on both feet just to be safe. Everything is okay with my injury, and I got some proper running shoes so I think I’ll be fine. But once again its 26.2 miles, so I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Aside from training for the marathon — are you back in the studio recording?
I’m currently working on an 8th studio album right now, which will be released in 2012.

Is there anything you can dish about the eighth album?
No, I’m not going to talk about that yet, but “Kiss” is currently available on

Seems like a lot of your songs right now are about love. Can you dish at all about your love life?
I’m single and focused. There’s nothing going on. I’m loving my animal that’s about it.

Well, thanks so much for your time. Good luck and we’ll see you at the finish line, right?
Thank you so much. I HOPE to see you on the finish line.
