Gerard Butler Escapes Death While Filming Surfing Scene (PHOTOS)

Gerard Butler was rescued from the Northern California waters while filming his new movie Of Men and Mavericks on Sunday afternoon, X17 reports. The actor was held under water by some unexpected big waves and taken to Stanford Medical Center for treatment.

Gerard, not an overly experienced surfer, was in the water with professionals Greg Long, Zach Wormhoudt and Peter Mel.

"They were steering clear of a set of waves in the 15-foot range when a much larger set broke in front of them, Butler was held underwater for two waves and washed through some rocks while tethered to his surfboard," Wormhoudt told local reporters (via X17).
The actor was not injured and was released from the hospital later that day, he was more shaken up than anything else.

The plot line for Of Men and Mavericks that Gerard is staring in is based on a true story about surfer Jay Moriarty, who conquered Mavericks, the famous Northern California surfing location. He later died in a free-diving accident at age 23. Gerard plays Frosty Hesson.
