What does it take to create a celebrity fashion brand? Designer Bruno Schiavi is the man behind several diverse clothing lines, including the new Kardashian Kollection! He works with the famous sisters to help craft their various ideas into a single, unified vision. 

Not only did Celebuzz score an interview with the jet-setting designer, but we have a look at the “Kollection” as well — plus tips on trends and what to be on the lookout for in 2012! Check out our chat with Bruno below!

How busy is the life of a designer?  Do you have time to rest?

No! [laughs] I spend 60 to 70 percent of my time on a plane going to different counties. Last year I slept 11 nights in my own bed. Sometimes I get up in hotel room thinking, “Where the hell am I?” I’ve got 11 of the brands I run and it gets pretty exciting — and tiring. I love what I do and that’s the good thing about it. 

A lot of our readers are very excited to learn more about working with the Kardashians.  What is it like working with the three very different sisters who all have a different aesthetic and have a different style? 

It’s so funny because when I first started working with the girls I thought, “Oh my God, were going to have three girls, three different opinions, very, very stylish, sophisticated, glamorous women that are all going to want to design something totally different. How is this going to work?”

The great thing about them is that they do have their own personal sense of style. They are very unique in whom they are but at the same time, they do come together as sisters and they to tend to agree on most things because they have the same vision. They really have a passion for fashion.

Working over the past 12 months with the girls, I’ve really realized that they put their heart and soul into everything they do. From the minute we start putting the new boards together for the new collection to the time we select the button or the color of the thread on the jeans that were doing or how were going to be photographing the home collection — these girls are so involved. That’s why I love working with them. I work with a lot of celebrities, and to me, unless you really have that fire and that passion, it won’t work.

When you look at our collection, you can see that there is something for Khloe, there’s something for Kourtney, and there’s something for Kim, but then there is something that all three of them will wear at the same time.

Can you describe how the process works? 

The way we would design, we would start off with what the girls are loving, what they see at the fashion show, or what they are wearing. I would also tell them what’s happening on the runways around the world. What’s happening in Milan, what’s happening in New York, in Sydney? I give them the starting points; they give me the starting points. So it’s a total collaboration from the beginning.

Then from there, we sit down and decide shapes for the season. For example, how many dresses do we want for this collection? How many blazers? Any rompers? Do we want any short dresses, any over-sized tops? Then we start putting the color palette and narrow down the print selections. Then we start designing the collection — the actual garments. Once the garments are designed, the girls and I will sit down with a whole team, and models as well and we have a look at the different designs we put on paper and decide how they will look on models. You know some things look better on paper, but once you manufacture them and put them on the model, you might think certainly not.

After that we do the initial fitting. We fit the clothes on the models, because the girls have fit requirements. They want to accentuate certain parts of their body and make sure that we cater to every size that’s out there. You know, Khloe’s tall, Kourtney’s petite, and Kim is curvaceous. So they’ve all got different body types.

Then after that, we start thinking about the ad campaign. Then we start thinking about the marketing, what they are going to wear in the photo shoot. So, from day one they’re involved all the way through to the day it’s in store and beyond. Then when it’s in store the girls are so excited they are wearing the collection out, they are telling fans what’s new on Facebook and Twitter, on their blogs. So, it never ends. Then we start the cycle again. Start on the next collection.

How do you navigate a difference of opinion?

 You know, it’s all about talking it out. So, if we disagree, if the girls disagree on something, it’s always about making sure we’ve looked at every possibility on this, if we all disagree, then it’s thrown out, we are not going to proceed with the design. Then we say, let’s make another design, let’s tweak it. You know, it’s a process of elimination, but it’s been really easy. The girls pretty much know what they want straight away so, it’s never really a battle in terms of trying to approve something. The girls usually always tend to agree. For example if Khloe likes the top and Kim doesn’t really like it, Kim really understands that Khloe really likes it, so it should be in the collection. There’s a bit of give and take.

What’s coming up with the collection? Is there anything you can reveal about what to be on the look-out for?

The denim! We’re very excited about it. It launches in about four weeks. The girls love denim. And then we are really excited about home. Home looks incredible. There are three designs in home, everything from bed to cushions and pillows to bathroom accessories and shower curtains. Home is spectacular so we can’t wait for that. And swimwear of course is to die for. We are shooting our new swim campaign actually in January. We’re very excited about that.

What would you say are some of the trends to be on the lookout for the fashionistas out there?

High/low skirts are really hot, florals are really hot again. And color, lots of color. In summer we are seeing a lot of vibrant colors, a lot of neons. We’re seeing a lot of the bright colors like the pinks, strong pinks and mixing and matching is still really key.

I also think that you have to embrace your own personal style, and then be guided by what someone else is wearing. You need to dress for your body type. You need to look at your body type and be sure you are dressing for your own body type. With your height, the way you have your hair, that all comes into play with what you are wearing as well. Love your body and dress for yourself.
