Although Amber Portwood and Jenelle Evans have become household names thanks to MTV's Teen Mom and 16 & Pregnant, Jamie Lynn Spears was making headlines way before them when she had a baby out of wedlock at the age of 16.

Back in 2007, Britney's little sister left Hollywood to become a teen mom and has maintained a very low profile -- until now. Just a few months shy of her 21st birthday, Jamie Lynn is opening up to Glamour about how her life was turned upside down and how she's moving forward.

"It was 2007. I had been on a Nickelodeon show, Zoey 101, and after we wrapped shooting, I just wanted to go home to Louisiana and finish high school, be a cheerleader, all that. Then I found out I was pregnant. I was young. I was in love. I was like every other teenager, except I had this last name. And I made a decision that is forever my decision," she said.

She went on to explain the reason why she wasn't using birth control at the time. "Like many young girls, I was really scared to go to the doctor... I was on a Nickelodeon show, and it felt especially embarrassing to ask someone to put me on birth control ... I did feel responsible for the young girls and the mothers who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy," she said.

At the time, she and then-boyfriend Casey Aldridge tried to make it work, but they eventually separated in 2009. Now as a single mother raising daughter Maddie, Jamie Lynn reveals this has only brought her closer to her big sister.

"[Our bond as mothers], it's such a big thing, you know? Especially 'cause there's an age gap there -- she's 10 years older. I think if I were just a normal 20-year-old, I wouldn't be able to relate as much to her," she said.

She hasn't given up on love but is taking her romantic life very slowly.

"I've been on dates here and there, going to dinner or a movie, but nothing further than that. I'm a mother first. I have a little girl, and until I'm serious about someone, he's not going to be around her. I'm not going to say, "Come to the house, and let's watch a movie," because I have Maddie there."

She adds: "I have to be patient and wait for the right time and the right guy. I would have never known that until I went through what I went through. I'm just patiently waiting for Prince Charming."

People made a huge deal about her getting pregnant and keeping the baby. But let's be honest, most teenagers do have sex, and if she were to have an abortion she would have got more flack for it than keeping the baby. She made the right decision for herself, and I applaud her for being strong and being able to keep out of the spotlight and cameras for a long time and keeping to herself. She did it with maturity, something that would have been hard for a 16/17 year old girl.

Jamie-Lynn made the decision that was right for her. Keeping her child and being a teenage mom was not an easy decision. It's great too see how mature, articulate and down-to-earth she has become.
