If this report is true, Anne Hathaway is exercising a lot of will power! The British publication Daily Mirror is reporting that the Oscar nominee is on a 500 calorie diet in preparation for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables after she was asked to lose 16 pounds in three weeks.

"Producers have assigned her a personal trainer and she is literally eating nothing more than a couple of apples a day, and some protein – mainly in the form of a shake," the Daily Mirror reports.

Anne, 29, is taking on the role of a dying, hungry prostitute, and according to London Daily Mail, she was a healthy size 10 before starting this crash diet. She's not the only one who's shed some weight for this movie.

The usually jacked Hugh Jackman, 43, was nearly unrecognizable when spotted on set as the character of Jean Valjean.

Other familiar faces to join Hugh and Anne in this classic tale include Amanda Seyfried (Cosette), Helena Bonham-Carter (Madame Thénardier), Russell Crow (Javert) and Sacha Baron Cohen (Monsieur Thénardier).

Do you think this weight loss regimen is too extreme for a role, or is it part of the job? Sound off in the comments.

i bet its the HCG diet you eat 500 cal. a day and take some kind of supplement that causes your body to use its excess stored body fat for fuel (to make up for the lack of eating) leading to fast weight loss, nutshell.

I respect her commitment to the arts; to the role, and to the director and the production. I'm certain that she is being taken care of during production because no one would reasonably want any harm to be done, and certainly they don't want the liability either. I'm certain that it is no coincidence that she is doing this role after "Batman" because she did have to slim down. By next Christmas when the advertising for these films are done, she will be quite ready to live the next productive stage of her life with marriage and eventually children. I hope the public will let her enjoy her blistful rest after the holidays. Then who knows what will be the pleasant surprises at series of award ceremonies in 2013. As for her setting the example, Anne H. has already been a representative at a Nobel Prize conference, Trevor Project, and other various political and humanitarian efforts in Cambodia and Africa. When she outgrows her princess stage, I look forward to when my daughter becomes older and is left to examine the contribution that this individual has given to humanity in the decades to come. I know Anne H. will be successful long after I'm gone from this world.

She did the same for playing catwoman, so, my question is: When should we stop calling it "getting ready for a role" and start calling it an EATING DISORDER?

Just for the record, a UK size 10 is a US size 6.

I hope that she only eats the 500 calories a day for 3 weeks leading up to the shoot, and not during the entire film! She won't make it, otherwise. You would pass out or worse, for sure.

I think, it's too extreme, they can alter her image or something technical to make her look skinny, that kind of diet is not healthy at all.... bad role models....

I don't think any actor should sacrifice their health for a movie role. 500 calories a day? That's just ridiculous.
