It Was 'Common Sense' for Tamra Barney to Remove Implants After Cancer Diagnosis, Says Expert (EXCLUSIVE)
The Real Housewives of Orange County star recently opened up about her decision in removing her implants. After discovering she had cervical cancer, the 43-year-old wanted to be more aware of her body and mused on her Facebook: "Feeling lumps in your breast that need to be biopsied is scary and made me wonder if my implants could make it harder to detect breast cancer ... and why take the chance?"
Celebuzz went to Dr. Francis Palmer, leading Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and author of What's Your Number? The Palmer Code, to comment on Tamra's potentially life-saving decision.
"There's no question that having breast implants makes it difficult to feel and diagnose lumps," he told us. "If that was really a concern of hers, then that would be a common sense approach to take the implants out."
Dr. Palmer (who personally did not treat Tamra) also added that it was "the proper call" for the reality TV starlet to have a breast lift after having her implants removed.
"It's really common," he said. "It's the same type of surgery that you would do in a breast reduction but you're not really trying to reduce the size per se of the breast tissue. You're reducing the excess tissue so you get something that's shapely and not deflated."
For the past 5 years I wanted to remove them but I did not have the confidence or courage to do it. The best part of being in my 40's is that I started to feel more secure with my self and accepting of my body. I now work hard to keep my self healthy with diet and exercise. I love the way I look without my implants and do NOT miss them at all.Tamra speaks more about her cervical cancer surgery in an upcoming episode of Dr. Oz Show, airing April 12.
