Famed fashion icon and hair stylist Vidal Sassoon was found dead at his Muhlholland Drive home  in LA Tuesday morning, May 9.

Officials say that 84-year-old Sassoon died from an unspecified illness, and he was surrounded by family members when law enforcement arrived after being called around 10:30 am.

Vidal Sassoon was born in Hammersmith, London in 1928. He started off as a shampoo boy at the young age of 14. But, he quickly worked his way up and opened his first hair salon in London’s Mayfair District in the mid-1950’s. Not too long after, Sassoon created the famed Nancy Kwan Bob.

In an interview with the LA Times, the dapper hairstylist talked about what it was like when he first started working in the industry:

“When I first came into hair, women were coming in and you’d place a hat on their hair and you’d dress their hair around it….We learned to put discipline in the haircuts by using actual geometry, actual architectural shapes and bone structure. The cut had to be perfect and layered beautifully, so that when a woman shook it, it just fell back in.”

Sassoon eventually moved to the United States where he opened up a hair salon and an international line of hair products.

“If you have a sense of style and purpose and will you don’t want to compromise.” Sassoon said in an interview with Telegraph. “You must always do what you feel is right.”

Sassoon who has been married four times is survived by his fourth wife Rhonda, three children and a number of grandchildren.
